Should I, or shoudn't I ?

Post: # 5990Post Hi-Fi-Mogul »

I ran across this super cute 1953 V-M 990 Tri-O-Matic
overnite case portable hi-fi.
It is a 2 tube amp w/Se rectifier and a 4" x 6" speaker.

The tonearm has the original Sonotone 2-T cart in it,
and standard 1/2" wide mounting holes.

For 1953, it is cosmetically really nice.

If I win the minimum bid, it will cost me total $35,
including shipment.

I don't NEED another hi-fi, but it is very compact....

I'm eager for the polling results here, ha ha !

I've never seen a V-M with the amp controls integrated into the changer base like that. And I assume the "two tubes" means a preamp tube before the output amp, a step up from the uber-frugal models like my little RCA with one tube doing all the heavy lifting..

It's $35. What have you got to lose? It'll give you more happiness than 7 gallons of gas, won't it?

And It'll still be worth something a month from now.

It's VM, so you should definitely buy it.

OK, the voting is as the super-cryo-computer predicted.
I'll place the bid tonight.

Here's some info from the Sams.
Looks like servicing the amp will be
a piece of cake !

I don't have my tube manual at hand so i can't calculate... but how much power does that series filament resistor, R12, dissipate? Looks like a little electric heater.

Oops. I saw the voltage on the Sams. A little over 3 watts to shed as heat. Not bad.

Chris,
Thanks for the info. It's a 10 watt resistor, so
it should be relatively cool then.

At first I thought it was a vintage USB stick, ha ha !

Bids went above my limit.

I've got two RCA changers to service for customers,
so I'll have some hi-fi pocket money to try again
on something else.

That's too bad. That would have made a nice addition to any collection and was in condition that you don't see that often. Better luck next time.... ;) :D :D
