Still Here!
Sorry for not checking in on here in a while; life gets crazy! Late in the spring I picked up a Zenith x940 that I was planning on doing a write up on here. I've done some work on it, but, in the middle/end of June I started to go through the process of buying a new house, getting my house ready to ...

Re: Magnavox amps
Hello, If the early stereos used two mono amps why did the 58 CG use two different amps ? AMP 150 and AMP 148. It would seem to be more cost effective to use the same amp for both channels. Hydro The '58 Concert grand used the Amp-150 and the Amp-179. They are the same basic amp, just tuned a littl...

Re: Magnavox amps
I found this list of Magnavox tube amps, and I really only have any experience with the higher-end models. https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/magnavox-tube-amp-summary.947589/. One note on the list, they mislabled the amp-182 as the amp-172, and the specs of some of the amps are a littl...

Re: VM 1002 in Michigan
The cabinet is pretty rough and looks to be missing its legs. Wouldn't be so bad if it didn't have the chips in the veneer.
Priced way too high for current condition.

I didn't think those were output transformers, but interstage transformers between the driver and the output transistors.

Re: Magnavox two piece stereo
Are those the ones they call Continental? That's not a continental. I attached a picture of my Continental. What those are, however, are the stereo that were part of a Magnavox TV and were designed to straddle the TV as a Stereo Theater with separate components. If you notice, the input selector ha...

Re: The Mighty VM-1000
I forgot to mention that in my never ending story with the 1000 is that I am looking for better hinge supports. When I got it, it was missing one, one was broken, and the third was fine. I bought 3 new ones at lowes so that they would match, but I have them tightened as much as possible and they wil...

Re: The Mighty VM-1000
Trevor, Thank you for posting such a nice notebook on the V-M 1000. Your efforts are very professional in the restoration. I cannot get over how nice and compact the controls are designed and aesthetically done. Gary quotes the 1957/58 price as $1025.00. Your $2000 asking price is really a bargain ...

Re: The Mighty VM-1000
Good to see you on the forum again, Trevor! We have missed you ! You did a great job on the cabinet. I'm also glad to hear the EV 26's are usable. I need one for my Imperial. "Mr. VM" will own a VM 1000 one of those some of these days. :D :D I think I wiped the cabinet down 3 times with r...

Re: The Mighty VM-1000
The old site was still running, and, you did post when you got the VM1000. I for one, am glad you posted here on this forum as I have wondered what was going on with the 1000. It's good to hear it again, and now being able to hear the tape player working. So, Thank you! For sale, you really want to...

Re: EV cartridge
I bought 4 of these, I needed one for my Continental, and one for my Brittany, put one in my VM-1000 and have a spare. The three I have installed have been perfect and sound great. They way I look at it, the packaging they came in has protected them from the elements and air over the years and has p...

The Mighty VM-1000
I'm trying to remember if the old site was running when I picked up my VM-1000 this past spring. It has been a little (and I use the word little pretty loosely, she weighs in at 216 pounds) labor of love since I got it. It came out of a little run down home in south Detroit, I doubt it was its origi...

Motorola 3-Channel Crossover Frequency
Does anyone know where Motorola crosses everything to the bass channel and the Treble left and right channels? I know Magnavox did their bi-amps around 1200hz, primarily to protect the horns that were rated down to 1000hz. I have the amp and tuner to a mid-level '62 Motorola, and woofers and horns f...

Re: Motorola - 1959 models SK-32 SK-17 SK-14 for sale
Would be awesome to get that SK32, that's from the First year of Motorola doing 3 Channel. I redid a '61 version, the SK-72?, sold it to a friend who is big into MCM furniture and wanted a record player. Now his friends want one too lol. Motorola's jut sound so nice, and they have quite the followin...

Re: Continental Frankengrand Revision 2!
Hello Guy's, Learning more about the magnavox's this had me confused as there were all the different amps out there. Looking at the photo's the amps look the same as the 1958 CG amps. (3 capacitor towers) Its making more sense now. couple of questions, Are the 148 amp biamped as the 182 series were...

Re: Magnavox tune up
Sounds like a heat related issue, tubes would be my first item to check, then resistors, then caps. I really hope it's not a case of Silver Mica disease, I have a Zenith with that, and I am not going to attempt that fix... If it is a tube, you may have to put them on the tester and let them bake a w...

If I remember correctly, I believe the neon light is used as a voltage regulator.hermitcrab wrote: ↑Fri Dec 10, 2021 7:22 pm Yes Greg is right ... for what ever reason... there is a neon bulb inside the MPX chassis that makes it look like it has something burning... what it's purpose is , I have never investigated as to what it does![]()

Re: Continental Frankengrand Revision 2!
The '67 imperial that I redid has the sealed woofer chamber with the tunnel between the two of them. It also has an amp rated at 150 watts output (supposedly) with 2 of the ultra-sonic woofers and 4 horns. It has a ton of bass, too much at times. The '61 French Provincial Imperial that I redid had t...

Re: Motorola Tube Stereo
I did a little research and found it's actually called The Laureate, model SK56-2M. Instead of it being a Motorola Drexel, the cabinet maker Heritage made this one for Motorola. Heritage actually made five cabinets for Motorola and they were Motorola's most expensive units. The Laureate sold for $8...

Re: Motorola Tube Stereo
That's a '62/'63 model, same model year as my SK112. The big three channel amp, like the one in this one, are rated at 51 watts total output, 110 watts peak. Motorola was getting every ounce of power that they could from the 6v6 tubes, and they sound amazing.
