This guy from NYC builds huge high-end amps and speakers, a combination of high quality sound and art. Now museums are showing off the equipment and the sound.

I've read about him in Stereophile magazine.
I've also read several accounts of listening to systems using Western Electric theater horns from the '30s. They were very sensitive because the amps f the time were not very powerful. They were also engineered to a fare-thee-well apparently, because current listeners report almost-religious experiences hearing them. I'd love to hear them but the ones that haven't been shipped to Japan seem to be on the coasts.
