Trivia question of the day......What kind of red record player is in that picture?

Billy Vaughn did a yearly album with the current hits on it. I think they started in 1959, but don't quote me on that. I have the 1962, 1963 albums. He provided the background orchestra for many of the pop stars of the time. That would be hard to imagine today. Les Baxter did the same thing. Ernie Freeman was another one. Do you own that album, Mr. Mogul?

He also did some cool Exotica a la Martin Denny and others.

I've never heard of Ernie Freeman, I'll check him out, also.

Les was a genius. I have a lot of his albums. Many were pre-stereo. He brought Yma Sumac to us.

I have a Pat Boone album, "Memories", on Dot DLP 27548, that featured Ernie Freeman and his band. He sounds a lot like Billy Vaughn with a predominantly saxophone lead.

Also check out how those young people are dressed. The guy with a t-shirt, collared shirt and cardigan, pleated slacks with the cuffs rolled up, white socks, loafers. The girl with a wool skirt, blouse, no body parts hanging out. Boy, that was a different time, huh? I'll bet young people nowadays don't own that many clothes in total, let alone one outfit.....

We ought to be able to come pretty close to identifying the record player. How many mono record players used a BSR changer? Not very many, would be my guess.....

I have one mono record player that has that changer, it is a one tube wonder with a 4" speaker. The name on it is not readable but it does say made in Canada. Would the
one in the photo be a Truetone?

Yes, I saw some Capitol stereo suitcase models with this era
of a BSR, but this player looks mono with a crystal turn-over
cartridge.

This record Young Pops came out in 1960.

The player may be a 1959 Symphonic, but the Baxter
cabinet doesn't exactly match these.

I think you may be on to something there, Walter. Capitol may have had their own brand of record players. Columbia, RCA, Decca all had theirs.

There is a "Uniline" record there, at the girl's left knee. I have a Nat King Cole album with that label, circa 1963. When did Capitol start making the Uniline records? Obviously earlier than 1963...

Dah, I never thought about Capitol making their own record players, but more that likely another company made them and Capital just put their name on it. I have a small Columbia that Magnavox made. Magnavox called theirs the Aristocrat, model SC268F and it sold for $199.50. If you look in the downloads in 1959 CATALOG you will find it.

The key to the model is that unique recessed
part of the front of the lid.

The Capitol photos do not show that unfortunately.

It would be logical Capitol would use one of
their own record player models for the album.

But then again the art layout department may
not have thought of that.

I found the album online and the rear jacket makes no mention of the changer... and it is a portable changer... is it stereo???? My grandmother had the portable Zenith model with the speakers that locked in the front panel. No idea what happened to it.

The jacket notes say it's 1960 so that might narrow it down. Also, a lot of the albums pictured are rainbow label stereo and the album itself was available in stereo... and the "Summerplace" theme was THE song of the year...

Given Les baxter's artistry as an arranger and leader, I wouldn't mind having a copy. He did a "South Pacific" album I've seen on r2r that goes for some significant money... like to snag that, too.

Quintessential version was Percy faith's. I asked my mom and they danced to it at their wedding.

Nothing like sitting behind the wheel of a 60s car on the highway listening to that. Just takes you to heaven...

A cute little stereo model 925 from 1959.

The cabinet lid looks the same, and there's
the UA-8 changer.

It looks like the same amp in my Phonola. Mine has twin volume controls. a tone control and is a three channel with a VM changer. I never quite understood how they got three channels from 2 Tubes.
