I finally made it......

Post: # 23702Post electra225 »

.......kicking and screaming into the 21st century. I am now the proud(?) owner of a solid state hard drive on my desktop computer and the Windows 11 operating system. It only took three hours to install this stuff. I can say it's faster. Better? Time will tell. ;)

As a non-early-adopter, I admire your daring. Mine at home is still Windows 7.

I have a dependable old Win 7 computer setting here under my desk. I use it to process music to digital. A 2011 model. I'll use it as long as it works.

The SSD will be blisteringly fast compared to the old mechanical drive. Fast enough to make up for extra Windows 11 bloat? Might be a wash?

Our local computer guru is a fanatic about solid state hard drives. He tuned this thing up until, like you say, it is lightning fast. I thought the mechanical drive was doing fine, but I've had a couple of issues that indicate it's life was short. I haven't had enough experience with Win 11 yet to make any determinations on it. Certain things are in different places. Some changes I like, some I don't.

Silicon lithography triumphs! No more harvesting the super-magnets from junked hard drives :P

Any improvements in performance were due to the SSD. It's amazing how much faster- Boot time should be like half of what it was before, and launched applications you used to be able to get a cup of coffee before they came up now start before you can lift your butt off the chair. I LOVE them. I used to work at Intel- For me the two things I love most about an SSD is that first, any memory location on the disk takes the same time to access- which is very fast, so no waiting for the record player tone arm to slowly swing from this track to that track and back again. Second, you NEVER have to defragment again. When you had the old record player mech, if files/programs got broken up into scattered pieces that tonearm penalty got longer and longer. Because the SSD happily fetches each piece of the data in the same short delay no matter where it is on the hard drive, even an extremely scattered file takes exactly the same short amount of time to load.
