Null Balance

This GE has a switch that is momentary ... is this to adjust the balance control or speaker phasing?... not sure how to use it, not that I am even close to trying it out yet , just wondered what the purpose of it is.. :?:

I had the same type of switch on the GE I did for the antique guy, it was called a NULL BALANCER on that one too, and if memory serves it cut the volume when pushed. I am not sure why you would do that trying to balance things, but GE must of thought it was necessary. Next to that switch was a scratch filter switch.

If I remember correctly, it worked on the radio too.
