1964 Oldmobile Ninety-Eight Luxury Sedan
The TOTL Oldsmobile for 1964. Well-equipped and mostly original with 38,000 miles. No Wonderbar, no tilt wheel, no Twilight Sentinel, no power vent windows, but otherwise pretty much loaded. I like the '64's. Bill was out here one year and we went to the BOP show. There was one at the show
. It had more of the goodies than this one has. This is a nice car. Thrity-two nine is pretty good money for a four-door car.

4-door hardtops are finally getting some respect. I'm aware that GM called it a sedan, but it's really a hardtop and not a sedan. If it were a 4-door sedan it wouldn't be worth half that much. That said, for a daily driver, sedans are a lot less drafty.

Gorgeous car and my colors. That interior is nicer than my 62. AND the pockets on the seat back! Cadillac stopped that after 1961and it didn't reappear until 68 or 69...
What's that thing on the passenger fender under the hood?

The round silver thing near the front of the right hand inner fender is the air conditioning muffler. (I'm not kidding. They called it a muffler.....
) The valve further back and slightly down is the POA valve. Buick, and I think Cadillac, mounted those higher on the firewall above the evaporator box. Buick mufflers were gloss black and were wrapped in foam rubber with a clamp around it. Those clamps are frequently missing. I used to walk thru junkyards and kipe those clamps. The junkyard guys just tossed them on the ground. It used to grind my grits that "lowly" Oldsmobile had fancier interior fittings than did Buick. Olds 98 Luxury Sedans gave the series 62 Cadillacs a run as far as fancy interior fittings was concerned. No 401 Buick pilot in his right mind would ever challenge a well-tuned Olds 394 or any 429 Cadillac to any kind of a race, except maybe miles between gas pumps.

Didn't the '64 98's feature Buick's new transmission, the Turbo Hydramatic 400?

Learned something new there...
I like the trunk mounted antenna and I see 6-way seat... my poor Fleetwood was ordered without it...
Little research shows cornering lights were optional. I lean more toward the formality of the 4-window sedan but this car looks great in 6-window style... the additional line of halo trim along the slab sides and the aluminum trunk valance are nice touches. Wheel covers are a bit busy... overall, this car and buick Electra look better than the lincoln!
I also see a single master cylinder. Was 65 the year all divisions got duals?

1967 for the GM divisions with the exception of Cadillac. And Rambler. Yeah, Rambler had a dual master cylinder, along with Cadillac, in 1962.

My '65 Starfire is the only vehicle I've owned that had rubber brake line failures (x2). Single system. They must have sourced some cheap flexible hose in '65. And then the steel brake lines were prone to rust too. I had in stored in Grandma's garage, 100 mi. from where it now lives in storage. I was prepping it for the drive when we sold Grandma's house and the brake pedal went to the floor. I had to scoot around under the car in a tiny garage with no clearance under the car, replacing steel lines. Dual braking systems make huge amounts of sense. Wish I had converted my Chevy.

I've converted any '50s & '60s cars I've had to DMC. I'm fine with drums, I'm fine with manual brakes, they work fine if properly set to spec for regular driving, but single master cylinders need to go.
Much of an Olds guy as I am, '63 and '64 model years are just too "slabby", almost bordering on boring imo.
They do have much nicer interiors, dashes, and materials than '65s to '70s, but I much prefer the exterior styling of the latter.
