Classic Hifi Care

After a few weeks of haggling I picked up this tabletop fisher ... Ultimately paid 35 bucks for it and I think it was too much the more I look at it , he started out at 100... because it was his dad's and had great emotional value .... it was not clear to me that it had emotional value ... speakers gone, power cord cut, tuning string and dial indicator missing , cigarette burns on the cabinet... yep they did ole dad proud ...., the TT is original and a rebranded BSR used by fisher .... audiokarma guys claim Fisher was using BSR TT's near the end of the company ...now the problem is where do I get a schematic for this?... inputting the model and or the chassis number at sams website brings up nothing...is there a trick to looking up schematics for fishers?... there are no other numbers anywhere to be found

Pic pic pic... if it's a tube model the tubes will be worth more than $35.
I looked in SAMs Index, there's a A-19 Allegro, not sure if that's relevant.

no the A-19 is the tube model ....this one is the last model made A-192 solid state with a 11-R chassis claimed to be 35 watts from 1967... here is a pic of a nice one

It's a nice looker and I'm sure it will perform nicely but at some point, they must have used Garrard changers as your photo has a Garrard.

Elton, go to this site and then scroll all the way down and you will find you Fisher A-192. If you open that up there are five links at the top. One is "Contact Us" and maybe they will have the schematic you need. There is also one called "Links".

Hey Bill,
They did in fact use a BSR model UA70 aka McDonald 500 for this the last year, it is supposed to be a TOTL for a BSR...the picture that shows the Garrard changer was the standard from the previous years. The bean counters must of figured a BSR would save a few pennies...and I did find a service manual for the 11-R ... I sent a copy to the fisher website ...

Maybe they remember dad kicking his stereo while he puffed himself to death.

Didn't Zenith have a Allegro line of radio-phonographs?

I'm surprised this didn't cause some legal disputes over names.....

Yes, Zenith did have an Allegro line of stereos and I believe they came out in the early seventies. It was during the time when cabinets were starting to get cheap, slide controls, and 8 tracks were the thing to have. They actually did not sound all that bad, but quality was not what one would expect from Zenith.

I'm guessing that Zenith let Fisher use the "Allegro" nomenclature for similar reasons the Buick Motor Division didn't sue them for using the "Electra" nomenclature. The amount of instruments produced were miniscule compared to the "parent" user. Plus, the quality of the product did nothing to injure the reputation of the name. Not worth the expense and hassle to fight it.

anyone ever hear of a Fisher model 150 ?....the service manual I found also covers that model... it's not on the fisher site... I believe it is a small console version that uses the horizontal faceplate , while the Allegro dial is vertical...

I got both channels working again...left side was dead had input into the tone control board , but nothing coming out ... turned out to be the german caps that people claim never go bad , these fishers are full of'em . I also need to find some speakers that are very narrow ... the original speaker cabinets are only 3" total depth , that ought to be interesting to find .... here is a pic of the caps oozing out the ends

Sounds like it was an easy fix. Have you tried it with other speakers? If so, how does it sound? Three inches is pretty narrow, good luck trying to find something that will work. But, with your carpenter skills maybe you could build some???

If those are Frakos then I can't recall anyone saying they don't go bad.

not sure what the brand is,but one of the YT poster/ repair guys made the claim that these caps are robust and hardly need to be replaced ...oh and I will build some new speaker enclosures... only thing is the speakers are connected through the hinges... and those hinges are no longer made ... will have to come up with a solution that does not look to out of place on it ...

I have confidence, Elton, I know you will build the speaker enclosures that will look like factory and come up with the correct thing to make the speakers play.

well sort of done, still got to go through the changer , my homemade speakers work OK ,but one of the tweeters from parts express was junk ... just rattled so I just cut the wire to it ...the speaker cabinets look just like amateur hour the finish I started with just ran and dripped , a lesson never use the all in one min wax stuff . But it plays great and loud , I believe it when it says 35 watts total ...once I get the changer in I will take another snap. one thing I was surprised at is there is no 45 adapter or even a spot on the cabinet for one ?...

The all-in-one Minwax is not worth two hoots on furniture. It is the cat's pajamas on fences and gates, however....

Nice looking speakers, Elton, even if the finish did not come out the way you wanted.

Thanks Bill , it didn't help I used leftover scraps of wood for the finish , poplar, Luan, and masonite ... the pics show the terrible staining and color difference , I was surprised , my wife who normally does not take any interest in my hobby , claimed this set as her own , I guess she likes the compactness of it .
