That was a huge hit for Jimmy Dickens. It was a "cult" song rather like "Elvira" and "Swingin'" decades later. "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor On the Bedpost Overnight" and "Behind the Barn" were others Dicken recorded and were popular. He was on the Grand Ole Opry until he died, in his 90's. His main claim to fame was his band.

Jimmy Dickens told a joke on the Opry, maybe too often:

"When I got home this afternoon, the wife said we should run upstairs and make love.
I told her "dear, I cannot do both".

I always liked hearing him on the Opry on Saturday nights. When he was making that joke he was in his late 80s and 90s, so it was likely true. He did have a regular repertoire of jokes and they would often make me laugh all over again, even when I knew the whole line. And it was always fun when he snuck a new one in.

Composer John Williams has turned 90 with his brains intact. In a radio interview yesterday he quipped that somebody advised him to cite his age in Celcius, making him 32. By that logic, I'm closing in on 24. And who says there's nothing good about the metric system?

As they say, much of aging (for those in good health at least) is in the head. My wife's uncle in Baltimore, an ex-Westinghouse engineer, turned 99 this year, still has all his "marbles", does long walks every day, and still likes to swing dance!

I used to like watching Hee Haw, which occasionally had a great guest like that. Any kid would have appreciated that song. I recall someone at Jr High school saying the name of that song, did not know it was a song until now.

Somebody told me the other day that Barbara Eden "I Dream of Jeannie" was 90. Loretta Lynn must be pushing 90 real hard. If Patsy Cline were still with us, she would be 90 on September 8 of this year.....

Jimmy Dickens actually had a pretty good voice, given the right material. The songs he made famous were, many times, silly songs like we have been talking about. I have a gospel album he cut in the middle 1960's. He does an amazingly good job on "How Great Thou Art". That is not an easy song for a country artist to maneuver.
