Patsy Cline had an Oldsmobile and a.....

Post: # 6373Post electra225 »

....console record player of some kind. At first blush, I thought it might be a Magnavox. I don't believe it is. Listen to the video of "Why Can't He Be You" and, about a half dozen pictures into the video, you'll see the console. Can anybody identify it? I believe the Oldsmobile is a 1954 to 1956 88 four door sedan.

Can t' see the dash clearly, all 3 years are slightly different. Going by the door panel and side trim believe it's a '56 Olds 88 (not Super) 4 dr post sedan. No clue about the console.

Can't say about the car... my parents choice of cars back then was Buick... the phono?.. I vote for Zenith... I had a table top with a tone arm that looked identical...

I believe Roger has the year of Oldsmobile identified. The knobs on the console looked Magnavox-ish to me, but the dial isn't right. I also thought maybe Zenith, but I didn't think the dial was right for that, either. I guessed an orphan make of some kind, Truetone, Firestone, Montgomery Ward, maybe even a Stewart-Warner. You can't really see a lot of the dial. Is that changer, again guessed to be maybe a Webster-Chicago, right for a Zenith?

Actually I believe the changer is VM. It's in the early 950 series. Here's a photo of a 955 from Gary's site. The 45 spindle looks VMish too.

The radio dial does not look like Zenith too me. I've never seen a early VM unit so maybe it's a VM, or what ever it is they used VM changers.

Thanks, Bill. Do you have a guess on the make of the console?

I agree with the "Not Maggie" votes and with the V-M notion. Not clear what the console is. But beyond that, "deleted".... wasn't Patsy Cline a genuine, talented, one-of-a-kind star?

Many of Patsy Cline's "belly rubbers" were written by Cindy Walker. "Why Can't He Be You" was one of her premier love ballads, a belly-rubber if ever there was one. Written by Hank Cochran, who is not necessarily known for that type of song. Patsy Cline never recorded a bad note, ever.

Here's an uncropped version of the console photo from the web. The white back round reminded me of my Philco. Not sure now.

The dial has a Stromberg-Carlson look to it. I can't see it all, but it appears to be AM only, which would cancel the S-C guess. The grill under the TV looks a little like an Admiral. Did Admiral use VM changers that early? I'm guessing early to mid-1950's. Patsy Cline was born in 1932, so she would have been around 20 when that picture was taken.
