Why?

Post: # 6018Post electra225 »

When I log onto my Windows 10 desktop, I frequently get a prompt reminding me of their offer of a free "upgrade" to Windows 11. Why would/should I consider that? What is there about Windows 11 that is better than Windows 10. I liked Windows 7 better than 10. I liked Windows 98 better than anything I ever used. Any experience pro or con with Windows 11?

I have this theory that corporate people are rewarded for novelty, whether the new thing is an improvement in function, utility, or convenience or not. And now we have all become conditioned to expect 1.0 followed by 2.0 and then 3.0, or 3G followed by 4G and 5G. If the new number doesn't come along, we begin to worry that we are falling behind. It's the modern version of car companies finding out that they could change models every year so the public would feel obliged to buy new ones. Of course, companies like GM weren't really putting out new models every year; they just fiddled with sheetmetal and options and only changed every 2 or 3 years.

There are times when major revisions may be necessary but it seems to me that the computer folks make the transition as difficult as possible with new pages, icons, locations, and sequences. It's probably so you will be fully aware that it's new and won't gripe about the price.

My computer geek buddy told me not to be in any hurry to install Windows 11. He said they need to get the bugs out first, which makes perfect sense and I totally trust what he tells me.

Hello Guys this has always bugged me. I read somewhere that in the 50's the FCC made the electronic companys make a broadcasting stereo system that was compatible with the older mono systems and could not be proprietary either.
But with computers its different? think about it... programs that only work with certain systems.... software times out and stops working... you have to buy new software... hardware not compatible... you have to buy new hardware... constant upgrades.... you can't opt out except if your smarter than the manufactures and know how to bypass stuff. WTH! Blue screen of death and no warranty? I have a new Pad I got at Christmas and a old Macbook. The MacBook can't play media anymore cause the commercials stop it cold with never ending rainbow circle despite having a terabyte of memory and the fastest cards in 2013. Fighter jets run on this stuff but I can't play a video on YouTube? Its a system designed to constantly make you pay over and over. Hydro

Chris hit it on the head. They finally figured out the perfect consumer product: expensive as "deleted" and quickly obsoleted.

I still run Windows 7 on our PC, but the MacBook Pro and iPad Air are kept updated, Mac seems to do a much better job of introducing actually worthwhile software improvements.

Agreed, Mac seems to be more with it when it comes to having less trouble. They come out of the box with far less problems than Window's. What I find annoying with Mac, their life span is much shorter. They become obsolete sooner, or maybe I should say stuffs starts not being available much sooner. My iPad won't do half the stuff it did just one year ago. There is really no good answer. The computer world has a big hold on us and it's made it so we cannot live without it. I still have a landline, and my cell phone is a flip phone. When a someone, or a business, says give me your cell phone number and I will text, they find it very strange when I say I don't text. I get the weirdest looks, like what planet are you from. One of these days I will be forced to come over to the dark side.   ;) :)

My flip phone texts. Slowly. The letters are in groups of 3 or 4 so you have to click past the first 2 to get to the third. It discourages loquacity, shall we say. But Friday I have a "tele-health" appointment with the gastroenterologist. Can I do it on my computer? No, you must have a smart phone. So on Friday I will borrow my boss's smart phone. I made an appointment with her. "Be here on Friday at 9:30."

Chris. I can do a tele-med/health appointment on my computer. As long as your computer has a camera you should be able to do that type of appointment too.

We also just have a flip-phone and landline, though we do have an iPad Air my wife used for work including tele-health appts with her patients and sending 'scripts to the pharmacy both of which she could also do on her desk-top at work. We can text with the flip-phone, though as Chris says it's awkward. As Bill says we may be forced to get a "smart" phone but am putting it off as long as possible. I refuse to get addicted like one of those people you see walking around like zombies or using in restaurants or everywhere. When we do it may be one of those simple "Jitterbug" jobs you see in the AARP magazine! lol.

The one that really gets me is two people sitting across from one another in a restaurant both on their cell phones. Are they texting each other? Are they both so bored with each other they would rather look something up or talk to someone else? Come on people, there was a life before cell phones.

That does not seem right. Maybe your health care system isn't as advanced as mine which is Spectrum health?

I agree. Something isn't right, maybe a misunderstanding?

Cell phones , I-pads , etc are just a addiction... they pump dopamine into your brain every time you look at them...that is why people can't get enough... even risking their lives and the lives of everyone around them to play while behind the wheel...

I don't turn my phone on until I get to work. I can't talk and drive at the same time anyway, not physically possible with my disability, so maybe I'm one of the safe drivers, as far as texting goes? I like my phone for the ability to check on the forum when I'm at work. And I call home on my lunch hour to check on the wife, she tends to fall. Otherwise, I don't use a phone for much else. I don't text when I have a telephone handy. I know, I know......  ;) ;)
