Bob Dylan

Post: # 29594Post TC Chris »

Bob Dylan's birthday is May 24 so the public radio folk show was playing his songs, in performances by him and others. I was just back from the first sail of the season and was in the drive-up line at McDonald's for a Filet-O-Fish for dinner and the wonderful version of "Girl From the North Country" with Dylan and Johnny Cash came on. That song always turns me to mush. I was afraid I'd be wiping my eyes when I got to the pay window. Not sure whether it's living in a place where days get short and cold in the winter, or remembering lost loves--probably both-- but that one always does it to me.

And then when I was powering back up the river after the sail, "I'll Be Seeing You" came to mind and accompanied me back to the marina. I know much of the lyrics, it turns out. It's one of those American classics. Here;s a Sinatra version, marred by the excessively bouncy band arrangement behind him. There are also version by Billie Holiday and Willie Nelson online.

This latter song is from my parents' era and as a teen I would have rolled my eyes. But then young and stupid is redundant.
