Re-foamed speakers

Post: # 27126Post TC Chris »

I just reinstalled the woofers in some Larger Advent speakers. The foam had rotted away by a few years ago, as it does. I ordered a kit from Rick Cobb in FL back then and now I finally did the job. I always worry: what if it doesn't center and the voice coil rubs? That made me procrastinate (just like worrying about my welding prowess made me put off welding the damaged flag pole for 8 years).

But I followed instructions and took care and it worked just fine. The kit comes with a CD of a 30 Hz tone to play when doing the final glue-up, to help center things. The cone was actually centered even before playing the tone but I did it anyway.

Rick seems to get good grades on internet reviews. I'll order more kits from him.

P.S. The weld on the flag pole has held up through winds over 50 mph too.

If it's not there already, perhaps you'd care to share that vendor with the forum by posting on Suppliers.

Good job on the refoam. Chris. Speaker reconing is something I have long wanted to tackle. I put off working on changers for way too long, so I understand procrastination. It feels good when you tackle something you are not familiar with and it turns out well. ;) :D

I have re-foamed a few speakers , maybe I do it wrong but I have never had a coil rub after re-foaming , I find the cone will self center if it is free and the magnet will center the coil naturally as long if the spider is still good . I then glue the foam on to the speaker cone first, let it dry then carefully tack it on around the basket constantly checking for rub ... so far results have been good.

Thanks, Chris!

Elton, do you know anything about reconing speakers? Where can one find the parts needed? All I ever see are for the big-name stuff, nothing for general speaker reconing. I have an ED speaker in an old radio that really needs redone.

This what Rick Cobb recommends, but with the addition of the 30 Hz recorded tone t make sure it's not rubbing and to encourage self-centering. I think the danger comes when you glue the surround to the frame. If you get clumsy you can pull the cone off center.

Yesterday I connected up the old Larger Advents with their new surrounds. They sound just fine--no voice coil rubbing. I did worry about the old gaskets, which were very thin ones. They matter because these are sealed-box ("acoustic suspension") speakers, and the gasket assures the seal. In non-critical listening so far I don't hear any problems.
