One of my record players has a bad speaker. I found a replacement but there is no RED DOT or any marking to indicate positive. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have no clue which is which.
Thanks,
Bill

Re: Speaker polarity
Hi Bill,
You can use a 1.5 V battery and 2
sepaate alligator clip leads for this.
Clip each of the 2 leads onto each speaker terminal.
Clip or tape one of the free leads' end to one side
of the battery.
Then touch the other lead end to the other
end of the battery.
A little pop and the cone will move.
When the cone pushes out, that will define the positive
speaker terminal.

Re: Speaker polarity
Just to clarify--the positive terminal is the one that causes the cone to move out when the positive battery terminal is hooked to it, right?
And more important, usually, than having the right connections is having BOTH speakers hooked up the same way. The black wire can go to the red dot, as long as they are both that way (and as long as it's not a multi-speaker array on each side). On a mono signal, out-of-phase speakers sound odd; the noise doesn't come from between them. Reverse the phase of one speaker and compare. It's obvious which is wrong.

Re: Speaker polarity
Thanks you, and this is a mono unit. I will give the battery test a try over the weekend.

Re: Speaker polarity
Thanks, Mr. Mogul, the battery test for speaker polarity worked perfectly. Now I just need to get everything back together and see how it sounds.
