Vera Lynn

Post: # 24219Post TC Chris »

Our public radio station just played Vera Lynn singing "We'll Meet Again." It's one of those songs that always has me dabbing at my eyes. It's from WW II, dark days for England and then for the rest of us. People were in motion all over the world. My Dad ended up in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. They were moved from here to there with little notice and people made friends and lost them. Some never came back. But one response was optimism in the face of it all:

"We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again some sunny day
Keep smiling through
Just like you always do
'Til the blue skies chase those dark clouds far away"

I had never heard of Vera Lynn until this post. I had heard that song. I have in instrumentally on a Lawrence Welk album, and with Alice Lon and Bobby Beers singing it on another LW album. Both albums are on Decca, so they would be pre-1958. I need to do more research on Vera Lynn. I like her voice. Thanks for sharing..... :D

Vera Lynn used her real name. She was British and lived to be 103. That recording was probably on the British Decca label. She was a "dame". Isn't that like a man being called "sir"? She was quite the lady, apparently. :D
Life can be tough. It can be even tougher if you're stupid.....
