Re: Hallicrafters SX-110
Thanks, Dennis. Now, of course, all I use it for is an AM radio. I might tinker a bit with shortwave now that it works better, but there isn't much on shortwave that I can get here. Listening to those ham operators was kinda neat. My stepdad was heavy into Hallicrafters. He had tuned antennas and got serious with it. He had several sets. The S38 version I have is basically an AA5 with a shortwave band and complicated alignment instructions. I've never used it much, hardly any, in fact. The four-tuber has the nicest cabinet. I don't remember the last time I had it plugged in.
I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.....Thomas Alva Edison

I have several pre-war Hammarlund Super-Pro radios. Big, heavy, well built, with separate power supply.
I've come to love them,as they have variable bandwidth up to 20kHz, and a 20-watt 6F6G push-pull output.
Tuned to a good AM station and played thru a good 2-way speaker, they sound amazing.
You might try The Drive in Tucson, 50kW @ 830. Vintage rock, live DJ's, few ads. It comes in like a local here.

Re: Hallicrafters SX-110
I think I posted about that on the topic. KDRI, 830 AM, "The Drive" does come in here like they are broadcasting from down the street about a block. The needle on the meter is higher for that station than some of the locals broadcast off South Mountain. I listen to it, then "The Bull" on Saturdays. The Drive even comes in here on AA5's most days. When the sun goes down, The Drive gets pretty noisy. They must cut their power.

830 runs 50kW day, 1k nite. Pity.
No AM comes from South Mountain, only TV & FM.
AM sites look for lowland sites, as their carrier follows the nape of the earth, whereas the TV and FM freqs are line-of-sight.
