These were good, torquey dump truck engines. Gas hogs, but effective and dependable. You couldn't overheat one. I liked this thing. Not much on rat rods, but I like this one.
The Ford 477/534 engines were built like a diesel. The heads were flat with the combustion chamber in the piston. Most of the truck engines had oil bath air cleaners up into the 1970's. The engines had huge lower end bearings, very beefy construction. They had solid valve lifters and mechanical valve rotators. They held good oil pressure, a first for Ford truck engines. I dropped the wing nut from the air cleaner down the throat of the HUGE Holley four-barrel carb on a 534 when the engine was running. It knocked a few times, then settled down after swallowing the wing nut. Apparently, it burnt it up and spit out the remnants. It never did hurt the engine.
