I reckon I need to Google Jimmy O
I'm sure this atrocity is not how Magnavox built it. Jimmy O must hotrod and repurpose old consoles. It is going to be hard to "unsee" this thing.

My '56 Magnasonic is close in time to that one--but still in its pretty mahogany finish. The one pictured is "recovered" he says, like maybe in Tolex?? That would be criminal, unless the original finish was beyond refinishing.

It does look like it is covered in some type of material ... it looks interesting .... One thing I will say , I'd rather see this than converted into a liquor cabinet . $8000 ?.... I think he is living in another dimension....

I do admire his courage with the total teardown of the changer.

I was taught never to trust an electronic technician who had a neat bench. Jimmy O may have outstanding mechanical skills, but I'm not an admirer of someone who hacks the finish on a Magnavox cabinet. One of those has to be in really terrible condition for the original finish to not be salvageable. Covering a hardwood cabinet with Tolex is like putting wallpaper on a Packard.

Oh the humanity! Whoa! Looks likes just plain red & white vinyl, and while the workmanship may be good, the concept... abysmal! And that changer teardown...yikes, he's a braver man than I! In the best of circumstances I avoid messing with changers, my idea of repair is drench 'em with Kroil and hope for the best! Luckily my Garrard, Dual, and Phillips have worked fine since new, though the Phillips did need a new belt once. I can[t believe anyone on this planet is crazy enough to pay 1/10th of that price for that thing, and not even that, really! The asking prices for consoles are beyond amazing these days. Asking, not getting, prices that is.

I don't think it's worth the sales tax of what he's asking for it. The owner has other stuff listed for astronomical prices. It's not stereo. It will plow stereo records. He took the changer apart, but then did he get it working?

Re: I reckon I need to Google Jimmy O
I ransomed the Chevy from winter storage today and was examining a pristine 1950s' fiberglass runabout with tail fins. It has red and white vinyl upholstery that looked just like the console. Perfect for the boat, but....

Looking closely, I wonder if they just painted it red/white, not sure if it's a covering or not...? Yuck, in any event.
Chris some of those finned runabouts sell for mega-money: Herter's Flying Fish, Custom Craft, and a bunch of other fiberglass big tail-fin models. 5 figures is not unusual nowadays. '50s fin car owners sometimes buy them and paint them to match their cars.

Re: I reckon I need to Google Jimmy O
The one I saw was pristine in its original gelcoat, but I'm sure the vinyl had been redone. My own taste in boats runs more to the the traditional, form-follows-function concept that has served mariners well for centuries. Modern, Euro-style sailboats leave me cold, for example. But when to comes to cars, I have an irrational fondness for Virgil Exner's Forward Look, and later for Bill Mitchell's GM work. Cars don't have to be as functional as boats must be. We humans don't have gills.
