Car show time tomorrow

Post: # 12352Post electra225 »

It has been cool and rainy here on the last few weekends. Tomorrow is supposed to be cool but sunny for a car show. We are going to one in AJ at the Moose Lodge to benefit a local animal rescue the wife supports. I usually enjoy the little local shows. We'll see how this turns out. I gave the Buick a lick and a promise. Now it's on to Discount Tire to have the tires checked.

That's odd... it has been rainy & cool in northern lower Michigan too.

The weather babe says we are getting frost the next six (!!) nights and to cover the pipes and the plants and to bring in pets. Yeah, pipes are on the outside of the building around here. I'm the only one in our complex that has their pipes insulated. There are places in Phoenix, in older homes, that the water heater and washer/dryer are out on the back porch. We will need the heater on the way to the car show in the morning. It's about 20 miles north of us. I had all my plant covers boxed and upstairs in the shop. I had to dig them all out and cover the "germaniums"....... ;)

The little car show we attended this morning was okay, but not great. It was a car show, and I'm glad we got to go. It was held at the Moose lodge, and the "Meese' were supposed to fix breakfast, starting serving at 6 am. That never happened, so there was a bunch of grouchy old farts there, me included, who were having caffeine withdrawl. They finally got the coffee done about 10 am, just as we were pulling out. There was about thirty cars there, mostly of "local" quality, with one glaring exception. There was the only correct, LOADED, 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Air two door hardtop I think I have ever seen. I don't believe I've seen another like it, if I did, I don't remember it. This car was Snowshoe White over Tahiti Coral. Dual-quad 283 and Powerglide. with every option available on a '57 Chevy except air. The owner of the car knew every nut and bolt on the car and had restored it as an "in you face" to the majority of '57 Chevy owners who hotrod their cars. He said that air was not available on the dual-quad and fuelie cars since there was no underhood room for the plumbing. Bumper guards and California rubber bumper guards, rear power antenna. Power seats, Wonderbar radio. I didn't specifically look, but I'm assuming power windows. Spinner hubcaps and the little 14" tires with reproduction "maypops". Power steering with the power steering pump on the rear of the generator. Even had a reproduction Delco battery. It was good to see one and especially at a little disorganized local car show. There was a Model T-based hotrod there powered by a 1967 odd-firing 225 cid Buick V-6 and a two speed variable pitch torque converter transmission. That one was kinda neat. Most of the cars I'd seen before. The '57 Chevy was a gem. I have pictures I'll post here shortly.

It was 26 miles to the show. About half way there, I started hearing a clicking noise, driveshaft speed. Worse when you slowed down. Two years ago, I had a new driveshaft built and installed. Sounds to me like one of the CV joints is dry or bad. There is about 500 miles on the car since the new driveshaft was installed. It was 31 degrees when we took off this morning. On the way home, it had warmed into the 50's and the noise was not so pronounced. So...... Otherwise, it ran fine and it was nice to take a spin in the old Buick again.

Last, but not least is this Cadillac Eldorado. Unknown year, but my guess would be maybe 1968, give or take. Sidepipes on an Eldo are not in my taste, but to each his own. The driver and his female companion were both wearing tall boots and spurs and cowboy hats. The car had Wyoming tags. Snowbirds fresh out of "Yellowstone"?

That's some nice-looking vehicles, Greg and I'm jealous that I was not there to enjoy. I see Mr. Bentley joined in the festivities and was dressed for the chilly weather. Your temp in AZ this morning was the same as I had when I looked at my thermometer this morning at 6. At least the sun came out for you. I have not seen the sun in weeks.

The sun was bright and glary this morning. I couldn't get the camera on the phone to focus and not make fuzzy pictures. In the good old days, one would take pictures with a camera. I should have known better, but I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. Bentley had a big time. Lots of little dogs there, so a good time sniffing was had by all....... ;)

That Chevy looks red in those pictures. It is coral, kinda pinkish, really pretty.

I'm not familiar enough with Chevy judging rules, but if those BFG repops, that tread style, were on a '57 Buick, they would be incorrect. Those are more late 1960's style, but I'm not the expert. The owner says they are right. That's really about all I could nitpick the car on, and you know there is no better nitpicker than I am. Very nice, well-sorted car. When was the last time you saw an original '57 radiator with the upper tank in that nice of condition? Those things always get caved in by people leaning over them to work on the engine.

Is your Buick still in the torque tube era? I can't recall when they switched.

And wow, am I ever glad Chevy gave up on the odd arrangement for the PS pump by the time they built my '61. Long ago when I was in Ann Arbor a neighbor abandoned a '63 Lincoln in a parking lot because the PS pump was built into the block and everything had to come off to access it. Back then it was just an old car, and an old Michigan car to boot, and not worth slaving over (I remember that I still wondered how anybody could abandon such a cool car).

My Buick has Hotchkiss drive, open driveshaft. That started with the 1961 models. Oliver tractors used that same setup on their tractors with power steering, starting with the 1954 Super models. They continued thru the 1963 three-number tractors. It was actually a really good setup. You didn't have to add another crankshaft pulley if you wanted to add power steering to your Oliver tractor. The downside is that if the power steering shaft leaked, it would kill the generator. Chrysler used a similar setup until the middle 1950's sometime. Chevy improved their power steering when they went to the integral recirculating ball setup like on Buick and every other GM division. They changed to a separate power steering pump, maybe mid-1962 (?) and then went to the integral box with the 1965 models.

Mine has the hydraulic ram system. It's one art that hasn't failed (I knock on wood.). Seems to work effectively.

Beautiful Chevy, and yes that's a weird PS pump set-up.

I like the V-6 in that rod, even if rods aren't my thing... I'm one of those keep'em mostly original people.
There's so few original '30s cars left :-(
Howsabout some of your Buick pics?

Roger, I have LOTS of Buick pictures. Which Buicks would you like to see?

And thanks, Doc. I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures. My grandfather took pictures of fish he or someone he knew had caught. My mom had pictures of rocks, mountains, cliffs that kind of thing. I have pictures of cars. I have thousands of pictures of cars. I have a picture of a '64 Impala SS with factory six cylinder, three in the console, no options, period. It had the standard spinner SS hubcaps on blackwall tires. I have a picture of a 1965 Canadian Pontiac with a 396 in it.

Your Buick is such a great representative of a real luxury car from that era of my early teens.
Our neighbor Mr. Brown directly across the street had a '63 or '64 Electra 225 4 dr hardtop (can't remember for sure which year, I think a '64?) in a metallic gold-brown. It figures very prominently in my memories from age 14, well, that and this one skinny blonde in my homeroom with 34D you-know-whats.

I'm not sure I have complete pictures of my car. I have outside and the engine, I'll have to do some looking. The interior is all original except the carpet. The leather is getting a little on the "old looking" side, but it smells so good, opening the door and smelling old leather, I hate to replace it. By rights, it really should be. I've posted pictures of it on here so many times, most people are sick of looking at it.

Just for you, Roger, I went back thru some of my old pictures. Maybe these will do pending some that are better. Thank you for asking.
