My sister's smart speaker (low-fi, but you can hear whatever you ask for) just give us a Patsy Cline fix, "Crazy," followed by Etta James singing "At Last." Talk about milestone music. They also played Roy Orbison a bit later.

On a different subject,I've been reading a nice book that my brother sent me at lunch hour, For the Love of Music by John Mauceri, the conductor. He's a good writer with very wide knowledge and it's a treat to read if you are interested in classical music. Or if you aren't--my brother, who plays the mandolin and favors old-time country, enjoyed it.

I'd like to check out that book. I've always felt it a real shame that so many are put off by the idea of "classical" music as some snobby elitist thing, because if approached with an open mind a great performance can really move the emotions like no other, and to me music's profound ability to do that is it's real power. There's a whole world of sound out there and to miss 90% of it by restricting oneself to listening to only one form over all others is a real pity.

Doug is my brother, I'm very proud to say. He's one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I know.

Sounds a lot like his MI brother, hope to meet him someday in VT. For reasons unknown VT seems to have more than it's share of outstanding folks like that. We miss living there but our first trip up this year is next week, it's where we feel more at home than anyplace and hope to retire there eventually.

You could not pry or bribe my brother out of there. He has a special fondness for the old people he cares for but also likes a state where he runs into his senator (Bernie) in the beer or hardware store. Pre-pandemic, traveling musicians often settled in at their house when passing through. Utah Phillips drank all his scotch. A New Zealand folkie group got left alone for a while and when Doug came home, they were anxious to show him the photo of the cool local animal they had found. The pix showed one of the guys grasping a local possum....
