We veered off into steam power last week, wasn't it, and so for those with an interest, I'll note an April online lecture from the Historical Society of Michigan on Badger , our coal-fired carferry. The notice says:

Since entering service in 1953, the SS Badger has delighted millions of passengers with trips across Lake Michigan. Originally designed for railroad cars, the Badger now carries passengers and other vehicles. Come learn about this National Historic Landmark, the last and largest coal-fired passenger steamship operating in the United States.

I remember traveling on the Badger when I was 9. My Mom and I took the trip. My Dad had passed away the year before and Mom decided we needed a vacation. That would have made the Badger practically brand new. I was 9 in 1960. It was a cool trip. I remember, being a car guy, watching all the different vehicles being loaded and unloaded. The waters were kind of ruff, and, I remember asking my Mom why so many people were leaning over the railings? We traveled around Wisconsin for a few days and then headed to Michigan's UP. Spent a few days in the UP and then crossed the "Mighty Mac" to return home.
