VM console stereo

Post: # 4937Post William »

I also found this. They list it as a Sony, but, it's really a VM that someone has swapped out the original VM tape deck. I hate it when people do that! I believe it to be a VM1002, which came out in 1960, and, replaced the VM1000.

That's not the worst price in the world. Do you reckon the original tape deck can be found for it? Is this model more or less or the same in desirability to the VM 1000?

From the VM1000 to the VM1002, VM changed stuff. I believe the speakers remained the same, but, tuner, amp, and changer were changed. The changer went to the more modern look with the bigger platter. The changer also lost the removable head shell. Instead of mono block amps they went to an all in one chassis that used PP 6V6's. The tuner was also changed and probably for the better, as I think the newer ones probably performed better. If anyone else has anything to add, please do. I really want to learn more about VM.

How hard would it be to find the original tape deck?

That tape deck is a good one, a Sony 350 three-head machine.

Yep the Sony is a superior deck, but of course not being original it reduces "collectibility" for what its worth.

Agreed, but sometimes an increase in fuctionality can compensate for a decrease in collectibility/originality.

I'm not sure why anyone would do that. The VM deck that came with this VM1000 is a great tape deck and very fixable if that is what it needed. Maybe they had the Sony and it was easier just to swap.
