Car speaker recone

50+ degrees in NEPA today so I figured I'd test and reinstall the front speaker in the 62. I stabilized the cone with silicone per internet advice and it sounded good until I mounted it to the dash. Still buzzy and raspy.
Any suggestions on a reconer? I can send it to the guy who did the radio for 150, at least I think it's what he quoted me. I think that's nuts...
It's just a simple 4 x 10 oval.

Gary at VM recommended this guy when I asked if he had a NOS VM 5X7. Gary did not have that speaker but recommended this guy:
David Miller
Speakerworks
4722 S Mingo Rd
Tulsa, OK 74146-4742
Email: none
Phone: 918 664 6299 Tell him I sent you (Gary Stork)
I never used him as a friend had a 5X7 that he gave me.

If it sounds OK outside the car and gets bad when installed, it may be that installing it is torquing the frame of the speaker and making the voice coil rub. Maybe try some shims, or even foam tape as a gasket so you don't have to bolt it down so hard and the frame doesn't twist.

I have several brand new 8 ohm Radio Shack 4X10 "Accoustic Suspension" speakers, with whizzer cone, in stock, ready for immediate delivery....
I don't know how much room you have between the radio and the instrument panel where the speaker fits. These have a large magnet that may cause an interference issue. I will be happy to take some pictures and measurements then post them if you are interested.

There's a Styrofoam "gasket" on the speaker frame to dash mount so I don't think it's torqued. I think the paper sagged because it mounts vertically, facing the front seat. The rear speaker sounds fine.
Thanks for the offer on a replacement but I really want to maintain originality. If anything, I'd like to find a nos replacement but these were 61-62 cadillac only. There's a service bulletin telling dealers to NOT use an Oldsmobile speaker which is the same size and has the same looking transformer but it'd damage the radio. Remember at of cadillac dealers also sold cadillacs...

Try taking the speaker out and seeing if you can twist the frame and make the sound go from good to bad. If yes, you could try (1) putting a permanent corrective twist into the frame, or (2) squeezing that Styrofoam gasket in the right corners to effect a correction.

I found a rebuilder in CA with a good resume who charges $80. And he's familiar with this type speaker.
Chicken feed compared to the 150 the other guy wants and all the trouble I've gone through trying to revive it. And 2-week turnaround.
This will be my Russian Christmas present.
