In my unfinished back room there's a big bookshelf that holds collected electronics, One of them is a Zenith 5-S-319. I passed it the other day and thought, "That should be the first winter project." It was my grandparents' radio and sat in the breakfast nook, probably for listening to local news as they started their day. It was working when stored about 20 years ago, although it would drop volume a notch after being on a while. I had probably replaced the filter caps long ago but maybe not.
When I got it, breakfast-room duties had left the finish pretty beat-up so I refinished it, and the fake-veneer strip was lost.
Here's a photo and write up of this model: https://www.tuberadioland.com/zenith5-s-319_main.html
It ought to be a simple job: 5 tubes (and a big shortwave v=band!). As I recall, the SW reception was competent, given the lack of tuned RF amp or other features.
Anybody else have one of these?

Re: Winter project Zenith?
Quite a smart-looking set, Chris. My fear with Zenith is green crud. If the chassis has been exposed to any moisture at all, green crud is a concern. It infests the oscillator coil and IF cans. I sure hope you escape that adventure.....
That will make a dandy winter project. With pictures, of course.....

I had one of these , if I recall they had a substantial size speaker like 6 or 8" mounted in the corner... I had a larger one like that... that had a 10" speaker in it...
