Classic Hifi Care

I haven't fired up the SHF-6 in a while so I threw a stack of doo-wop 45's on it and let 'er rip..

Oh yeah, that's a very nice little console.

I found one of those gals about 20 miles from here.
A piece of ephemera repair ticket noted that it
had come right from my current 1920's neighborhood.
So she came home again.

After restoration, I sold it to a lawyer friend.
After that, he wanted more hi-fi's,
so now he has 3 RCA's from 1957, that I sold him.

But, the SHF-6 is his fave.

This model has a great little amp and well matched
with the 12inch woofer and those off-set tweeters.

Oh yes. It's a fun little machine. Even the legs were in pretty good shape. Just a little polishing and they shined right up.
The lid was a mess so I did a trade with a local cabinet shop to re-finish it. I overhauled the changer and electronics for a Maggie 1ST232L that one of his customers gave him. It had been sitting up in his loft for about twenty years and needed a lot of work.
It came out nice. My first time working on a Magnavox.

I just found out that crescent made the little 45 changers for RCA back in the fifties...how come those are built like tanks, but the regular crescent changers in silvertone consoles are junk ?... at least everyone I dealt with was...

My guess, RCA designed it so it was built to their specifications.

Correct, Bill. Then after the Crescent fire, RCA built them in-house.

Thanks for posting this model. Its so nice to see all the different varieties in the absence of sales literature.

I have no doubt RCA designed Orthophonic HiFi's to be distinctive and yet use very similar record changers, amps, etc. This makes them very serviceable. Mono to stereo conversions on pre-59 changers are necessary so stereo records can be played, even if in a mono HiFi.

Due to need to play ANY record, the RP205 in my 6HF3 will likely be fitted with an EV-274 cartridge

I'm going to post some RP205 record changers I did and the stereo modification to one in an SHF-1, which came with a mono cartridge even though it had stereo playback for only the R2R.

Looking forward to viewing your RP-205 posts. I've done three now but love seeing what other experts have done to theirs.
