American Science & Surplus

Post: # 11334Post 19&41 »

sciplus.com
This is a good source for odds and ends. As I see specials that might be of interest, I'll post them under this thread.

Here are some mini-miniature bulbs of about the size of panel lamps. Not a bad price.

They now have carbon film resistors on sale. 1/2 watt may be more for solid state use, but could be a deal nonetheless.

That resistor kit is a deal... I would like to actually see what they look like ... I got some from China, and you can tell by the looks of them , they just look cheap... but they work , wonder if these are the same?

I've bought this kit on Ebay, and have used them as well as sets in higher wattages in my Hepplewhite and it's FM tuner. They've been working well for a few years now.

I got 3 resistor kits, such a deal. Carbon film (aka metal film) resistors are pretty spot-on with values. All 5 220K were 222-224 Kohms.

No values above 1 Meg are offered, possibly due to the voltage ratings. Unlike audio equipment, TVs have pulse voltages and boosted DC supplies of 500-1000 volts. These circuits use many from 680 kilohms up to 20 megohms and larger/longer carbon resistors are best.

If you know of any little ones that are interested in electronics, These sets are on sale now. They could be a gateway habit with which you could lead them on to the hard (tube) stuff.

Wow, Rex, I had no idea something like that existed. I should get it for me, maybe it could teach an old dog new things.

After the demise of Allied and RS, these kits seemed to disappear.
Amazon has one that could corrupt a young tech :x into thinking an IC is the answer versus discrete components

I really like my resistor kits and UV flashlight I recently got from this seller. :P

The old RS catalog even had a tube radio kit that was on a p-box, 4x4 plastic with holes in top to mount the parts.
The 1T4 tube was like a 1U4, IF/RF tetrode used in pre-transistor battery radios. https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/tandy_one ... 8_100.html

That is a real Kill-A-Watt, not a fake. Anybody who works on old electronics should have one. They really come in handy.

Dave and Rex, I appreciate your comments about these resistor kits. I believe I'll get a couple sets and use them in the Imperial project. You guys say the values are accurate, and you can't beat the price anywhere. 5% tolerance should be a lot more specific than 15% tolerance, given on the drawing.

I bought one 10 years ago. Think it was like $42...

I moved into an apartment and took the 61 Executive with me. My first electric bill was like $189!!!! The company INSISTED it was right and I had to pay it. "And what kind of appliances do you have? OH!!! Those old tube things use A LOT of electricity!" Well, you'd think I was running a laundromat, bakery with electric stove and a disco for that bill...

When I moved out, I got a $150 refund. Turns out I paid all the bills while the unit was empty. They never transferred it to the realtor...

Anyway, the meter showed the console at something like 8 amps or whatever.

I have a fake one. I don't remember the name. I got it cheap on Amazon, I think way under $20. I don't know how I got along without one for all those years. The Stereo Theater in full song, less the phono motor, pulls 320 watts.... ;) The Concert Grand about 420....

When I purchased my Kill-O-Watt I looked them all over, read the reviews, and then picked the one in Rex's link from AS&S. It works great, and I am not sorry I purchased it.

P.T.Barnum was right. Keep me away from bargains. I just bought a Kill-A-Watt and a little portable alarm clock.
