58 SR205H Questions

Hello, The 1958 SR205H is not able to be turned on ( it will be recapped sometime soon ). But looking at it a few questions come to mind. I see the selector switch has stereo, phono, FM, AM, tape. Only the stereo(phono) and tape are stereo. what i am wondering is do they divert or shut down one amp to get mono? Also why did they not just make a bigger stereo amp like the 9300 series in the imperial. Then if they are doing all this from scratch, why didn't they do a balance knob? Finally why two different woofers what does this do to the sound?

So you have a '58 stereo Concert Grand? Generally speaking, when you have a mono source feeding into the two bi-amps, the mono signal is branched off and fed to the two amplifiers. They don't cut one amp out. Look forward to pictures of the entire instrument. The Magnavox bi-amps are a different kettle of fish entirely compared to the 93 series Magnavox amplifier. The bomb would have been to make a Concert Grand with two 93 series amps wired for mono.

Hello, Yes its the little CG but still it is a CG. I forget that this is a new board and i did post for a while at ARF and audio karma. The collection here is up to 5 now 6 if you include the two to make one imperial. I originally bought it from Charles here on the board so we can say there are at least two of us that have met each other! The SR205H is really nice not beat up at all. I carefully put the glass tops away and my dad made a formica top for it so we could put a TV on top of it. I actually can't wait to get it up and fully operational. It should be good. Here is another shot of the family room with the Stereorama, Continental and the CG. Upstairs there is the ST208 concert hall and the garage has another st208 with the concert grand speakers in it! The '58 Concert Grand has two Amp-150 amps in it. I built my '58 Continental to the '58 CG specs, I call it the FrankenGrand, Incredibly powerful and sounds amazing.

What happens in mono Phono mode, FM, and AM is it just splits one channel to both amps. Stereo phono, and stereo Tape are true stereo, the only difference is that there is a Phono preamp circuit to boost the Phono stage a little.

I used my Concert Grand for a flat panel stand for awhile. My wife calls it the three hundred pound clock radio....

Hello all, Thank you for the compliments, Each one has a story and i hope to do them justice as far as restorations go. A couple more may fit. but i have to be selective because if it like cars the one you really want shows up when your unable to get it. The concert grand is super interesting I hope to lean more about it's history and build. The next one to run will be the Continental I am really looking forward to seeing a tuning eye actually work. As far as my wife i don't know what she says or thinks of the consoles, so far she has been "speechless". Hydro

My wife is not the biggest fan of my "radios". She does, however, like to collect hobnail lamps. I call them whorehouse lamps. They look like the old lamps you see on Gunsmoke with the big globe and the chimney running thru it. They do look nice sitting on top of Magnavox consoles. I have six Magnavox stereos with my eye out for a little Imperial to complete the set. And, to her credit, she has spent many years with my collection stacked three deep in every room of the house. A Concert Grand is a work of art. They are one of the most over-built contraptions ever built my man. If you have half the fun with yours as I have mine, you'll have a ball. Good luck.
