IMHO, the 429-powered Ford-produced police cars were the most potent cop cars ever built. Indiana has Mercury cop cars in 1972. Trying to outrun, or even run with, one of these cars required some really serious hardware. Nearly any 429 V-8 was potent, but none were more potent than the Ford version. I believe Fords were faster than Chrysler police cars because they were lighter. I was driving Macks when these cars were on the road. If "Smokey Bear" flipped on his "bubble gums", you got your "Puppy Dog" "to the side".... ;)

1972 had plenty of what that car needed bad. Cheap gas.

They ran big block Chevy Biscaynes on the Toll Road in northern Indiana. In 1970, they started running Mustangs and Torino sedans with the 429 Interceptors in them. The Chevys were faster off the line, but the Fords would run faster top end. My FIL had a new '71 Torino Brougham four door hardtop with a regular old 429 in it, and it was dangerous to drive if you put your foot into it. They ran those cop cars on bias ply tires, Goodyear Eagle "wide ovals". Cheap gas was a blessing as well, no doubt. ;)
