I have been hoping somebody would buy this. I cant let it disappear at this price and condition.
For some reason, I find these early AC sets very desirable. The styling and overbuilt chassis got me hooked.

Notice the input center back of the chassis that says television. I think that is fascinating.

That looks like a TRF set. I'm surprised you don't have it in your pickup as we speak. Very nice radio. The radio guys turn their noses up at stuff like that, but I like those sets. A TRF would be a plus in this case. Certainly worth $40 in any case.

I like it too. the chassis with all the tubes lined up in linear fashion is v cool!

It's deleted now - Dave I hope you got it, not some eBay tube seller!

The straight-line design was typical of early TRF models. Out in my garage where the commuter bicycles park, I've got an Eveready AC TRF chassis that somebody gave me (they made a bar of the cabinet, grrr....). All in a row. And the RCA Radiola 17, and Sparton. My Crosley Showbox has 'em NOT lined up, and seems like the Philcos too.

The Eveready came with a Magnavox filed-coil speaker.

TRF radios are really simple. No local oscillator and that to mess with. That radio chassis has four stages of RF amplification, a detector, a first audio tube, P-P audio output, then the rectifier. The audio output on a TRF is "pure" in that there are no birdies or squealing introduced by a local oscillator like there is on a superhet set. More sensitive at the upper end of the dial. No AVC, since there are no IF transformers. Alignment consists mainly of balancing the different RF stages.

I did get this for just $40, and because the seller was moving local but needed to downsize. Ozarka has a similar circuit to Philco 87, also TRF and pre-screen grid. Apparently, this company made crystal radio kits in the early 20s, then many battery sets until this model. Ozarka was sold door-to-door like vacuums. The seller said he recapped it, so that should be interesting. Most of the labor on these comes from stuffing multi-capacitor cans full of tar.

Also got a Sparton console that has three SW bands and uses 6 tubes (same chassis as 616 tombstone). And a bigger one, Stewart Warner 91-62 AM-SW console with 6 tubes, but one is a 6G5 eye tube, not an RF amp.

I am a sucker for almost any AC set from 1929-1942, thats NOT a good thing in my area because there are so very many old radios here!

I gave him my card so that after moving to their apartment, his keeper set "Western Air Patrol" needs an electronic restoration.

My old Temple is still running its filter capacitors in a can full of tar. I have new ones on a perf board ready to wire in, but I don't believe I'll ever need them. They are original from 1928.
