The Turbine And The '67 Indy 500

Post: # 8720Post 19&41 »

Came across this on YouTube. Those Granatelli folks sure had all their t's crossed and I's dotted. I was fortunate enough to be there when Jones qualified. I heard one run before the turbine, then the turbine. So quiet, so fast.

And nearly unbeatable. IIRC, a small bearing going out is what put it out of commission. AJ Foyt won his third 500 that year. The piston engine guys whined enough they made the turbine engine illegal for Indy racing.

I recall that '67 Indy well. Ever since Chrysler's turbine cars of the early '60s I've hoped I could someday buy a turbine car, I even bought a promo of one in that "Turbine Bronze" color. It looked like a futuristic T-Bird. It's a shame they were never feasible due to problems with emissions and other reasons. The Wankel was sort of a bastard son-of-turbine, and cool in it's own way, but to me the turbine was the real deal. That high pitched jet-engine whine alone would have sold me, and the heck with 10 mpg.
