Roger, your second photo was definitely a better looking speaker.

The late Art Dudley, a fine writer for Stereophile magazine and a smart guy, had a pair of Valencias that he loved. He acknowledged their shortcomings and valued their strengths, like efficiency and speed. He was also willing to correspond with readers and when he was restoring a Rek-O-Kut Rondine, Jr. turntable just like mine, he sent me a set of new motor mounts (he had to buy a large quantity to get the one he needed). His real prize was his Garrard 301 turntable.

Even though it was before my time, perhaps this sums it up.
Styles and fashions and decors....
It was a simpler time.......

That pretty much says it all.

I found a contribution to this topic. This thing would make me barf when I got up in the morning. Magnavox lost their way....

They were competing with offerings sold to those who wanted their stereo equipment ala carte. The only alternative was to have a unit hidden in unlikely furniture. I would imagine most of the matches to that unit has long since become kindling to warm the rats at the dump pyre.

The Valencias were truly wonderful speakers that unfortunately were too big and at their best at almost ear-splitting volumes. Needless to say that didn't go over well and they went the way of all such. They were conservative looking compared to the Flamencos. You can barely see them at the extreme L in that picture, next to the Zenith console--->
Chris, I had a Garrard 301 that I got with a mono Scott 99 amp right in the town we lived in, Charlotte Vermont, about 2004 for very little $$. I couldn't see what all the fuss was about, it was clunky and imo my Dual and Phillips TTs performed every bit as well, at least for my purposes, so I sold it. Same with a Thorens TD124 with SME arm I had... buh bye!

There's enough demand for the 301 that SME is making them again, using NOS and newly-made parts, as available. It's out of my league, price-wise. Here's Art Dudley's initial examination.
