The two-pole motor on the little GE that I'm working on has a little two-blade fan on the bottom of the motor shaft. That was common back then. It was probably to address the heat issue.

I'm nearing completion of the V-M 959 changer
on the Philco.

The mat was extremely scuffed, and a thorough cleaning
made no difference in appearance.

I put on the old thinkin' cap, and "art supply" came
to mind.
I then remembered using that cool old Scripto
glass ink-well in school.
I checked in at our long-lived art supply for "inks".

I found this Higgins Permanent black ink for about $5.
It's used for calligraphy and the such.
Should dry flat, so what the heck, I'll try it.

Worked like a charm. I used a small art brush to apply
and wiped off excess with a cotton rag.
Sun-dried and the mat has good grip.

Great idea. And the ink is probably water-based so it would not deteriorate the rubber.

Brilliant idea, good to know.

After installing the new small turret drive belt,
and the original idler wheel,
I hooked up some AC power to the motor.

Everything is smoothly cycling, but after the
album dropped, the tonearm set down on
the 10 inch record position.

I had this problem only one other time with
a V-M that was correctly serviced and
re-assembled.

The 12 inch selector lever has to be bent
slightly forward towards the platter.

There's no logic why this problem occurs,
but it does.

Fortunately those levers are steel.

I take a larger set of needle nose
pliers to make small bends.

Then re-test with a record album.

Make sure not to place the pliers on
the triangular area of the 12 inch selector
lever.
You don't want that smooth steel to be
roughed up, as it would then scratch the
record as it was dropped down the spindle,
or when you remove the album.

I finished the re-capping of the amp.

The OPT is mounted on the woofer, so today I
trimmed off the ends of all the leads to the OPT.

I'm going to solder on extra wire lengths so I can use wire nuts
to connect these leads to the wires to the amp.

It will make it easier if service is needed again.

Same here, Mr. Mogul! I appreciate the tip on recoloring platter mats. Now if we could come up with something that would make them soft again. I have some that are in good shape, but are hard as a rock.
