1956 Wards Airline Record Player GA1001-A
Hello all,
This is another 3 tube mono amp that had excessive
hum after complete re-cap.
I applied Motorola Minion's advice again on this one,
and I added an electrolytic cap from B- to chassis.
In this case, I decided to try a smaller value e-lytic.
I used a 10 mF 160V cap, and it worked as well
as a larger value in dropping the hum to almost zero.
I'll add a polarized plug to the AC cord, and done.
I'm glad to continue this technique after first using it on the
1959 Zenith stereo.

Another great job, Mr. Mogul! Is the tip about adding a cap from B-to chassis in the Getting Started board? If not, it should be. Thanks for sharing.

That Wards record player looks very similar to a VM model in Gary's site. My guess, VM built it for Wards.

I did a post on "getting started", with the link to the
topic page concerning the hum solution.
Today, I will try putting a 10mF e-lytic cap on a Columbia 617,
that has the same type of hum problem,
post capacitor replacements.

I wonder if a cap from b - to ground would work on my Magnavox imperial?... I have recapped the entire set and I still have a low hum when it gets turned on... kinda sounds like a guitar amp with nothing plugged into it..once music starts playing the hum is unnoticeable...

Magnavox has so many electrolytics in their chassis that they filter the filters in many cases. If your Imperial is like mine, it has a few 6EU7's in it. In the way of a suggestion, I'd check those for cathode to heater shorts. Try subbing the 6EU7's if you have some and see if that affects the hum any.
