Jazz & classical

Post: # 9158Post TC Chris »

The NYT has a regular piece on "Five Minutes That Will Make You Love ______." Here's "Duke Ellington."

And here's classical:

For me, while the choices are mostly great music, they're a bit challenging as introductory pieces.

In jazz, much of what I listen to is from the library I've built up. Here is a little Gershwin as interpreted by Coleman Hawkins' swing four. I can't take a track from my collection, this is from YouTube.

Can't read the NYT piece w/o subscription, so annoying! I'd like to know their classical choices.
I'm already an Ellington fan, and particularly of his alter-ego genius Billy Strayhorn.
Jazz/blues ranks about even with classical as my favorite, especially 1920 to 1970.

The nice thing about Ellingtons music are the changes it made over the time he led his band(s). I like his music of the Cotton Club era and the Blanton-Webster era as well as the Strayhorn era. The band became different with each influence and each has their own character.
