This seems odd to me........

Post: # 9138Post electra225 »

This is a console stereo/record player forum. We find, fix and use old home entertainment equipment. We make sacrifices to house and care for them in many cases. We listen to SOMETHING on them. The "Music and Media" board is intended for us to discuss that material. I have posted ad nauseum on this board, 90% of the time it lays an egg. I realize music is personal, and that each member here enjoys something different. I get that. Sharing the music we enjoy should give other members a bit of an idea of what makes us each "tick". I don't understand why we can't share our music like we do most other things. I believe this membership should be able to share their musical preferences without fear of being picked on. We used to have such discussions on Vintage, what has changed?

If you don't want to contribute to the "Music" part, how about contributing to the "Media" part? Do you play records, use tape? What kind of tape? Open reel? Cassette? DAT? CD's? 78's? 45's? Jump right in here, guys...... ;)

I guess you're right, Greg in that music is a personal thing. I try to read each new entry in the forum and If I can add something of value to the discussion, i do so. I guess my refraining from adding a valueless statement qualifies as something worse, no reply. My appreciation of country music is very limited as is my knowledge of it. A lot of rock music has the same appeal for me. I'm sure there are very few who share my appreciation of older jazz music, though I'll try a few numbers. I guess if each of us do, something will click.

I'm with you... not a country fan at all. Rock doesn't do it for me, either. At 53 that really puts me in an odd club. Jazz, big band, Boston Pops, anything from the great American songbook I know by heart and several artist's versions... so I can't weigh in on most of the posts. Got into a discussion with a group of 30 somethings about Martin denny vs Arthur Lyman and Les Baxter. They actually knew who I was talking about! So hope isn't lost. BTW, Arthur lyman won the discussion.

The point I was TRYING to make is this. Rex says he doesn't have an appreciation for country music because he doesn't understand it. I have the same opinion on a lot of jazz and most classical. If those who appreciate those types of music would explain how the genre operates, what are its strengths and weaknesses, what are its principal artists, that kind of thing, those who may not understand or appreciate a certain type of music might at least understand the thinking. I know that classical music is supposed to tell a story in music. Country music to me is about the words first, then the music. A lot of those words I have lived. Plus, I got my appreciation for country music from my dad. We all have similar stories. Sharing music is like fishing. You throw you hook in to see if you can catch a fish, rather than judging the pond by how still the water is. The medium itself is fascinating, particularly right after WW2 when they started using recording tape and then ten years later, when stereo became available for home entertainment equipment. We should share the wealth of knowledge on this forum when it comes to this subject. I really believe we are missing something if we ignore music while we restore musical reproduction equipment.
