10" LP's

Post: # 704Post hermitcrab »

Anyone collect these?... I have been picking these up whenever I find them at rummage and flea markets .. I find most seem like new, like not played much at all. few pops or clicks ... must have been a better vinyl? I have found a couple gems , early Doris Day, and a Les Paul and Mary Ford early hits ... they are an obscure part of the industry but that is why I like them..besides the magnavox micromatic plays them with ease...

I'd bet the 16rpm records of the mid to late '50s would also be a challenging quarry.

I have a friend that was a DJ back in the 70's for a local station ... he has a few of the 16 rpm records and a few records that are actually bigger like 20 inch which you need a special turntable to play them on which had commercials on them... he has one 16 rpm that has casey kasem's whole top 40 show for a week in the 70's ... don't think I haven't tried to buy that from him.. :( .

I don't collect them. I have three, I think. Doris Day, Marty Robbins "Gunfighter Ballads" and Frankie Laine "A Cottage For Sale". I haven't played them in years, since the changers I had didn't like them.

Actually, I collect them when I can find them in good condition. I have not had your luck, Elton, most of them I find are in really bad shape.

Weren't many of the 10" records used as promotional items? What would otherwise be the advantage of a 10" LP over a 12" LP?

When LP's were first introduced, the prime sales attraction was for the sound quality. They wanted to get people to buy them and if they didn't have to change their record storage for a larger diameter disc, that was a foot in the door for the better sound quality of the microgroove records. Multitrack records were the next step.

Many of my 10" LPs are Columbias, from the very early LP days. I need a preamp with selectable EQ because they are not RIAA and so usually sound lousy. Seems to me that my Maggie Prov. Serenade has a choice of EQ. The Bogen DB 115 amp does but it needs recapping.

Did anyone ever make a 10" 45 rpm record?

I don't believe so, as the their dimensions were critical in the players offered for them. They did make "extended play" discs with 3-4 3 minute cuts on each side.

78's were essentially single-play records. 45's were the same. I have wondered why somebody didn't make larger 45's considering the changers in console stereos would handle larger size records. And, the manual turntables that followed would handle larger 45's as well. Perhaps there was no advantage to developing long-play 45's in light of the refinement found in 33 rpm LP's.

Don't forget the niche the 45 filled in the juke box industry also. It did just fine.

There are new 12" discs recorded at 45 rpm from specialty high-end record companies. They are generally reissues of older recordings. I've never heard one. They tend to be pricey.
