Magnavox speaker wiring (3 wire)

Post: # 3834Post Hydrolastic »

Hello Guys, So in the quest to get a system running and tested, and a baseline of performance. I decided to purchase a set of speakers from a guy at work. This would tell me if the amp is sounding its best and if the individual magnavox speakers are defective. I dont have the new speakers yet but will get them after new years. This got me thinking, Looking at photos it is easy to hook them up too the smaller AMP 175's they have a Positive and negative for each side. The Continental however has a biamped AMP 182 BA amplifier and it has a 3 wire hookup. I dont think it is a solution to just connect the H and L terminals together and connect to positive on the speaker that could cause a problem in the amp. (speculation on my part) Maybe there is a way to add circuitry to the AMP 182 to have a 2 wire output. Or hook up the 3 wire setup to the speaker? The speaker is a horn and woofer with a crossover inside ( Klipsch Heresy 1's ) So i maybe able to separate the H and L inside the speaker? whatever mod i do will be temporary because i intend the system to be reversible. Photo is the speaker wiring diagram on the Continental external speaker. Hydro

If I were doing this as a test, I'd test each channel and each amplfier separately. I wouldn't connect the output of the treble amp and the bass amp on a bi-amp together under any circumstances. I can't see that working out well, nor what it would tell you. That's just my two cents. Good luck. :D

My ears are not good enough anymore to detect the small imperfections in the response of speakers. I have some kind of a rattle or noise in the Symphony if the bass is strong and the volume high enough. I believe what I'm hearing is the cartridge wires from the changer to the tuner vibrating on the shelf under the changer. It's not annoying enough to prompt me to remove the back and do some digging. I just turn down the volume so I don't hear it. I have been spoiled by owning a component system from the 1970's, with it's strong bass and extended range that our beloved old console stereos do not possess, and never did. I try not to compare the two, since they are apples and oranges in how they work. Like comparing the performance of the old Buick and my Mini. The Mini does everything better than the Buick does. It's faster, drives better, rides better, corners like a go-cart rather than dragging the rocker panels on the pavement when turning a corner, stops better. But it's not an old Buick. Same with an old console stereo. The newer stuff has extended capabilities, but it's not a Concert Grand........ ;)
I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.....Thomas Alva Edison

I I don't think I'd take a chance of blowing a set of Klipsch Heresy speakers. If I did I'd bypass the crossover and hook the high frequency directly to the tweeters and the low frequency directly to the woofers. I think I'd probably get a cheap set of speakers to try it out on first.

Hello Guys,I didn't plan on blowing up the heresy's. LOL and i actually have a cheap set of small speakers to do the first tests on. What i wanted to do with the heresy's was use them as the ultimate in setting the baseline since they are a horn loaded speaker. I have found on the consoles that if the speakers are good the console sounds good. One console sounds super nice so i know they have the capability to sound good. The Continental just needed so much work that in the end i still don't know which needed the work the amp or the speaker. Now with the fire at sound audio i have to get a new plan. If anyone has done this before let me know. It would seem like the console amp raiders would have done this already.
