Be still, my heart......

Post: # 3789Post electra225 »

This is an ultra-loaded 1972 Buick Electra 225 Custom Limited four-door hardtop. YOu may notice where they put the headlamp dimmer on Buicks in 1972. On the hood! This car has the fibre optics that monitor the lights on the front fenders. It has the Mark 4 road wheels, not technically correct for a '72 Limited, but commonly seen and they replace the rather plain standard wheel covers. My '68 Limited had the headlamp dimmer on the left front fender. I had a new '71 Limited two door hardtop. It was more opulent than the '68, but it wasn't as fast. About the only difference between the '71's and the '72's is the rub strip in the bumpers, the grille, and no vents in the trunk lid. All those did was make the edge of the trunk lid rust out where the water sat when the drain holes got stopped up. I have never seen a '72 with a headlamp dimmer. The guy who is narrating this video has obviously never owned a Buick himself. The "speedminder" was a standard feature of the big Buicks forever before 1972. About all this car doesn't have is Positraction and dual exhausts. It has Comfortron, which is a neat option for the climate control system. The '72's were not very fast. Smog regs had started to throttle the output of the 455 by them. I'd own this baby in a heartbeat if I had room to store it. And add some Stage 1 goodies to the old 455. Dream on, boy...... ;)

The same seller has a '70 Limited that he claims has every factory option. It does not have a headlamp dimmer, dual exhausts, positraction or the fibre optics lamp monitoring system, so it does not have every factory option. It is that awful baby poop brown color that plagued too many Electras in that era. He also claims it is "not a 225". Horsefeathers! Every Electra was a 225 after 1961. Starting in 1969 or '70 Buick used a "Limited" badge where the "225" normally is. In 1971, they said "Buick Limited" where it normally said "ELectra 225" There was also a "limited" script on the "C" pillar, where the regular Electra just had an "Electra 225" badge on the C pillar. So, it is a Electra 225 Custom Limited Sedan, model 48439. And, it shows the inlaid vinyl tops standard on Buick Electra 225 Limited cars. The regular Electra 225 had the vinyl top under the windshield trim and under the drip mouldings. Vinyl top was standard on the Limited trim option starting in 1967.

My parents had a 1972 Electra 225 Custom Limited. It was more the color of the 1970 in Greg's link with a cream colored vinyl top and cream colored interior. That think absolutely floated down the road. My mother drove it for six years and traded it in for a 1978 Buick LeSabre Limited. Also a nice car, but nothing like the 1972.

I have never seen a 1972 Electra loaded like this one is. Positraction and dual exhaust are not often seen on an Electra. That brown color was popular. Tan would make a better contrasting color than black does.

Here is a '71 Electra 225 four door hardtop for sale. You can see the difference between the '71's and the '72's and the difference between the regular 225's and the Limiteds. The blue spark plug wires and distributor cap must make it run faster. The car has GM HEI, which is an improvement, to be sure, but is not correct for a '71. The black wall tires do nothing for the dark green paint. IF you give this car "the touch" and can the blackwalls and blue plug wires this would be a nice car. It has dual exhausts..... :D

I think that hood-mounted guidematic is a dealer install and not a factory. Lincoln was putting the eyes on the cowl in the late 60s, early 70s, too. Funny thing is Ford was buying them from GM Guide.

Starting mid 60s, they hid the eye behind the grille somewhere. Also, if it were factory, it should be painted the same blue as the car.

I noticed this difference on the 71/72 Skylark as well. I had a 72 Skylark and loved it! I also had what I believed to be the best looking year Riviera, the 1965! My Uncle was a Buick salesman in Waterbury Connecticut and always had an Electra 225 convertible. He used to let me take that care while on an errand for him. I made sure every girl in my high school saw me driving it. What great memories I have of Buick!
