Stereo Theater speakers on the fritz.....

Post: # 29443Post electra225 »

I'm not sure I'm a fan of Magnavox horn speakers this morning. I hadn't run the Stereo Theater in awhile. I had to make a new diode thingy for the sync, got that done, finally, put it in. Had no TV output at all, just lit filaments. No sound, no raster, no picture, but that is another topic for another day. I decided to play a Johnny Bond CD. Got to listening really close, sounded like maybe the CD was bad, cutting out occasionally. Found it was the Channel 2 horn. If I increase the volume, it seems to work better. At lower volume, it cuts in and out. Now, for transparency, I haven't redone the crossover networks because the worked okay and the stereo sounded okay. How do I effectively troubleshoot horns?

Could be debris (spider "deleted") or something else in the throat.

Could be the diaphragm is going south.

No clue if the horns you have are serviceable.

First of all,try an ohmmeter and compare the two, R vs L. Or on the questionable one, connect it up to a low-power device like a small radio and see how it sounds at low volumes.

Thanks for the suggestion, Chris. I fixed it, but I don't know what I did to fix it. I hate when that happens. I pulled all the connections on that speaker circuit apart, then plugged them back in. It's all I really did. I've been running the ST all afternoon and it seems to be okay at this point. Martin Del Ray, David Ball, Johnny Bond, Boxcar Willie so far this afternoon. 4 CD's some played at higher volume than was really necessary. The Stereo Theater may be the best-sounding Magnavox stereo I have. Even with its 12" woofers, it puts out lots of bass. I think I'm on CD # 98 in my Sony CD jukebox. Wonderful device for playing music and not having to putz with it.

Next up is trying to figure out what ails the TV in this thing. The TV guys call Magnavox TV sets "Maggotbox". I cringe what I hear it, but I can understand their sentiments. It seems every time I go to run this TV set, I have to tinker to get it to work. I have a 19" Zenith under my bench. I can drag it out, plug it in, turn it on and it just works. Right every time. Usually don't even have to fiddle with the fine tuning.....
