The old Ranger has a bed rack I made from oak 2x2 and aluminum bar stock for bracing. The oak was first used for a ski rack on my brother's old CJ-5, and years after that I made it int a bed rack for the first Ranger and later modified it for the 2nd Ranger. The vertical 2x2 sections fit in the nice sockets that pickup trucks have carried forever for just that purpose.
But the Tacoma has no rack sockets. So I paid out big bucks for a fancy Yakima rack and the Tacoma base adapters. It's the dark season now, getting dark by the time I get home from work, so I spent two nights assembling parts in the dark. This is more complex that a Rubik's cube--all these moving parts to tighten in the right (or wrong) sequence, using both hands while trying to hold the work light so I can see what I'm doing. What I was doing was lots of #$**@!!!
Today it was raining, so no bicycle commuting, and I drove the Taco. In the parking lot I snapped a photo that others had requested. Here's the new red truck and its new sturdy black rack.
I'll need to raise the height a couple inches. That involves removing the crossbars but in daylight there should be less @*&##$**!!
