Newcomb 1640M

I mentioned awhile back that I was almost sure that I had a GE VR cartridge, so I got to looking for it. My first thought was that it may be mounted on a Garrard Type A that I have but no, it had a stereo cart on it. I thought maybe on my Thorens TD 124 that I have but not there either. I glanced at some other turntables, but I thought they were all too new to have a mono cart and they didn't. I searched high and low but couldn't locate it. I was about to give up searching and then it hit me. I have a Newcomb 1640M that could very well have the cart mounted on it. Bingo! It was on the Newcomb. I have two speakers that go with it but didn't think to take pictures of them.

I haven't ever played any records on the Newcomb but I do know it works because I plugged a guitar into it. People who like distortion would love it because I could make it distort a lot. The distortion may be because it has old and probably original caps in it.

That is a nice old Newcomb record player, Danny! I have dad's old Newcomb, a TR-16AM. It has been used literally thouands of hours and shows its age. It needs a platter, but it also needs other work. They are robust performers. Mine has the GE VR cartridge, will play 16" records, but the tone arm weight is what I consider excessive. I have some of dad's old records we played on it, though, and they are still in decent condition and have been played zillions of times when he was doing barn dances and calling square dances. Newcombs are tough, I can testify to that.......

I think Newcomb's are cool, and have always wanted one ever since seeing, hearing, and using them at school.

Greg, I remember when you posted about yours some time back. They are built like a tank for sure. This one has two speakers that latch together to make it easier to carry them.

I had the top off of mine at one time and I think it had 6BQ5 tubes in it.

I remember the record players at school but don't remember what brand they were. I do remember watching slides while a record was playing and when it was time to move to another slide it would go ding or something like that.

You are right, Danny, I had forgot about the slides/records and the ding. I think this makes us old. We had Newcomb's and Califone units at our school. The Newcomb's were my favorites.
