Well, that was fun. A time when young people built cars (and drove recklessly in a pre-seatbelt age). The drag strip guys were a lot safer but also had deeper pockets.
There are still a few young people playing with cars. Now they buy small Asian sedans and add the buzzy mufflers, fancy wheels, and who knows what mechanicals. I biked downtown tonight for the movie and on the way back a group of them passed me noisily. I shook my head and tut-tutted a bit but then reminded myself that 58 years ago I had rented the hoist at a rural gas station one Saturday so I could install my J.C. Whitney dual-exhaust kit with glass-packs on the Chevy so it would at least sound impressive.
