Greetings from a Collector in Virginia

Post: # 26048Post JoshDenty »

Hello!

Glad to stumble onto a lively vintage electronics community. I'm Josh - I'm a professional copywriter and with a long background in mid century electronic and appliance collecting. Vintage kitchen equipment, televisions, radios, pretty much anything you can plug into a wall and switch on so long as it was made before 1968.

I've been dabbling in doing my own repairs for a few years now but wouldn't call myself much more than a novice. Right now I'm looking to learn a thing or two about diagnostics so I can fix something when a simple recap doesn't do the trick. I tend to get pretty busy and lose track of my workbench, but I've got a few long term projects that I'm seeking guidance on. Zenith Cobramatic Stroboscope, RCA 1YB11 tape cartridge recorder, a lot of obscure equipment that I'd like to see work again.

Looking forward to speaking with you all!

Found it! Took me a minute to find a photo that fit the dimension requirements. I should have everything set up correctly, now!

You did well, Josh! Thank you so much! We look forward to seeing your projects and helping you see then come to success. I see you have a Zenith changer in your avatar. Do you have a device that uses that changer? :D :D

Make yourself at home and feel free to post often. I think you have one more post we have to approve, but it won't be a problem. Post again to the other board about the Zenith if you would care to. The forum software is set so the first three posts by new members have to be approved by a moderator. Another security measure..... ;)

I do. I'm somewhat in the process of restoring it - right now I'm looking for information about the original cartridge mounting hardware so I can reproduce it. Mine is missing the LP/78 switch mechanism and I'd like to restore it.

I included this photo on another post I submitted but I'll add it here as well. It's a stroboscope model S9011, 1953 build date. Postdates the radionic cartridges but it's before the switched to VM builds, if I'm understanding my history correctly.

A friend bought a Zenith radio/record player (model number forgotten  ) with the Radionic cartridge. Other than having to replace the cartridge to change the needle, I thought the changer was neat. Had the variable speed drive setup. The Radionic part isn't so great, IMHO, but it was built like a tank and built out well. He plays non-stereo records on it and gets along fine. I'd buy a VM-built Cobra changer if I could find one worth the money.... ;)

Thank you Josh, it is good to have you with us and please post often and share any photos you might have. I like your Zenith, it is a cool style and I believe I see the corner of a vintage TV in your photo too. Collecting can be addictive, we have a saying around the forum. "There is always room for one more" so be careful, it is hard to say no to any orphan you come across. ;) :) And please feel free to share your other interests, we like all things vintage, just post them in "other toys" so we can see your other interests.

That'd be my 1966 GE PortaColor. Fully restored, and I've been building a home TV transmitter setup so I can broadcast multiple channels without relying on a converter box.

I am all too familiar with the risks of collecting hahaha. My office is a bit overstuffed right now - I've sworn off acquiring anything new unless I rehome one of my old units.

Famous last words, I have heard that before, mostly from me, and it did not work.   Nice TV by the way.
