Good tidings to all, and take a moment to assess what good we have in life.
It sure beats the alternatives!

Re: MERRY CHRSTMAS!
As I was driving home from a Christmas eve visit, the public radio station broadcast a reading of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol with Jonathan Winters reading all the parts. I hustled indoors ASAP so as not to miss anything. Next, my Christmas eve tradition: Listening to Dylan Thomas read his A Child's Christmas in Wales. Two great voices.

Re: MERRY CHRSTMAS!
One more musical holiday tradition.... my Dad always mentioned that when he was a kid, they would listen to Madame Schumann-Heinke sing "Silent Night" on the radio on Christmas eve. I eventually looked to Google for confirmation.
From Wikipedia: "In 1926, she first sang "Stille Nacht" ("Silent Night") (in both German and English) over the radio for Christmas. This became a Christmas tradition with US radio listeners through Christmas of 1935." It fits exactly. Dad graduated from high school in 1935.
And better still, I have the 1927 Radiola 17 and the 1935 Wards Airline console that they would have listened to her on.
There's a 1911 recording here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0SXZw5ukQ0
The text includes this: "About thirty years ago, I knew an older gentleman who, when he found out that I had an interest in early recordings of Madam Schumann-Heink and others, related a story to me that he remembered as a boy, listening to Ernestine Schumann-Heink sing “Silent Night” each Christmas night on the radio.
In 1926 Schumann-Heink first sang “Silent Night” in English and German on the radio in 1926 each Christmas evening. This became an annual tradition that continued until 1935."

Re: MERRY CHRSTMAS!
Coolness! I love playing the old acoustic 78's to have the music living again.
In breaking news, I was gifted yesterday
with a nice Radiola 17 from my SIL, sent all the way from NC!
Looks to be an easy restoration hopefully.

Re: MERRY CHRSTMAS!
Apparently the Radiola 17 is an easy restoration. Mine needs new filter caps. Websites have suggested that they rarely fail but mine did. Seems to me they are not electrolytics, and they are non-polarized. I have a vague recollection also that motor-start caps are a substitute. Over the years I have scavenged tubes for other old radios and will need to repopulate it. I've also got the RCA 100A speaker that came with it.

Re: MERRY CHRSTMAS!
I need to find an original volume knob, as at first I thought it had just came off in shipping and was lost in the snowstorm of ghost turds used to pack it. No such luck.
