VM 1297 changer missing spring or not?
like usual the grease has turned to glue ... but while trying to remove the main gear , the reject pawl fell apart and I don't know if I am missing a spring for it or not... just what the pic shows is all I got ... the metal piece is a spring type piece , but the exploded view on other 1200's show a small spring as well ...the plastic cap refuses to stay on so will probably have to super glue it , but not before I find out if this is missing a spring ... when I press it together it seems wobbly on the shaft like it needs a washer or something, anyone have any idea?
Thanks
Thanks

You are correct, there is no extra spring.
Spring action is supplied by the design of the
"trip lever clutch" 81, and the "trip lever" 82.

Thanks, my Sam's was for a different year I guess , but here is another question, does the long end of spring insert into the slot on the start tooth?

I've not seen a VM changer that used plastic parts like in the pictures above. When did they start that? What models?

this changer has 2 washers and the bearing... yet the record sits low enough to rub on the corner speed control? .... check this out and no the record is not warped

Are all records like that, or just that particular one? I have noticed as I clean records that all records are not created equal. Some are thicker, some are slightly larger, and some have rough edges. The major brands seem to be better at consistency than the off brands.

Your wish is my command.... this is from a montgomery wards set... I must say I like this particular design of the VM changer... I did order another washer for the platter... while it was playing I could hear a rub and it was only while playing a LP ... this was why...rubbing on the corner of the speed control... the cart is intermittent and needs replaced , I just don't know how to get it out , hopefully it is only held in with two sided tape ...Bill to answer your question every LP from the 60's up to today especially the newer 180 gram records rub on that corner we'll see what another platter washer does ...

I have a Motorola stereo, and a parts changer, that has that skinny Tetrad cartridge. They are unobtanium at Gary's place. He has a Pfanshiehl replacement where you have to change the end of the tone arm. One of my cartridges is good, the other has a hard suspension system and sounds horrible. The replacement cartridges don't look as nice as the original, but, in my case at least, is the only fix available. Good luck.

Re: VM 1297 changer missing spring or not?
Greg, I was fortunate enough that Gary had one with the head for my other changer ... he must be out of them now?...anyway the cart was only held in with two sided tape, I carefully pried it out and popped the new one in, sounds good, of course this being a VM the idler was hard and had the familiar thump, thump, thump, because of a divot imbedded in the idler from the motor shaft . I have found soaking these in peppermint and alcohol does nothing to soften them up...must be the type of rubber they use.. but I put it in the drill and sanded it until I could no longer see the divot and put a coating of belt grip on it and it plays great with no stalling... here is a pic with another platter washer on it and you can now see daylight between the record and the speed control...

VM tended to run trim and the knobs really close to the edge of records for some reason. Are motor boards on changers all the same size?

Re: VM 1297 changer missing spring or not?
Gary I would say yes ...there is only one plinth template for all the 1200's , not sure how different the later models are like the 1500 and 1700 series...I have never come across one that new ... yet...
