VM 570 missing speaker
VM 570 missing speaker
A couple of months ago I got a VM-570 console. Noticed that the main speaker - I think it's a 12-inch woofer - is missing.
Found one laying around and, even though it seems to fit, I'm not sure it's the one that was in the console.
The brand of the speaker is "WHARFEDALE", made in England.
Does anyone know if this is actually the speaker that came with the console?
If not, what are its characteristics and is there a way to get a replacement?
thanks in advance,
Andreas

Welcome to the forum, Andreas! You will find plenty of good information here. Make yourself at home and post often.
I'm not the VM guru on the forum, but my guess would be that VM used a domestically-produced speaker, commonly Carbonneau speakers, made in Michigan, the same state that the Voice of Music factory was located. One of our resident experts will likely chime in here to confirm or deny this......

Re: VM 570 missing speaker
Welcome, Andreas. And, yes, Electra 225 is correct. Voice of Music pretty much used Carbonneau speakers in everything except their very top of the line and on those units, they used Jensen speakers. I happen to have that 570 model and it contains a 12" woofer, 8" midrange, and a 4" tweeter and all have the
EIA code of 719. I you want to keep it all original look for that 719-code stamped on the speaker. It can be found on the magnet housing. That is a great sounding stereo with plenty of bass and highs. If you have not done a restoration on the amp, I would recommend it. Be sure to add a fuse for protection and change out the crossover caps for best performance.
As a suggestion, I have seen 12" Carbonneau woofers listed on eBay before so that might be a place to look.
One more thought, if the current Wharfedale speaker is the correct OHMS, that will work until you find the correct 719.

Hello,
Thank you both for the information!
Found these on ebay. One has the "719" stamp. Do you think they will do?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/284839763035?i ... GTR=1#shId
Do you know the impedance of the original speaker? Is it 4 or 8 Ohms?
cheers,
Andreas

Re: VM 570 missing speaker
Andrea's, the one on the left is the correct one for the VM570. Ohms vary depending on what the manufacture has specified for their amp. I find it interesting that Steelman would use two different manufactures for their woofers so I am guessing that one might be a replacement. Either way, the one on the left is correct for what you are looking for. One vary important thing to keep in mind, that is packing them for shipping. The paper cones are very fragile and will rip easily. If you go for these make sure to specify special packing so you will get them undamaged. I hope this helps.

Re: VM 570 missing speaker
Welcome to the forum, also.
Sams photofact says the 12 inch woofer
is 3-4 Ohms impedance.
Ask the seller to put their Ohm meter across the speaker
terminals to get the impedance.
For a 4 Ohm impedance, the reading should be a bit less
than 4 Ohms, since the meter will be reading from resistance.

Andreas, do you have other record players/consoles? Perhaps you would care to tell us a little bit about yourself and your other hobby items on the Introductions board at the top of the Index page. We sure hope you'll make yourself at home.......

Hello again!
Thank you all for your advice!
Talked to the guy who will be restoring the console to ask about the progress and get an idea if it's worth ordering the speakers.
The cost of the speakers is ok, but the cost for shipping them to Cyprus is three times more
He told me to wait until they have an indication on whether the console will work.
Meanwhile I will post some info in the "Introduction" section.
cheers,
Andreas

Re: VM 570 missing speaker
Andreas,
Here is Bill's V-M 570 topic which may be of interest to you.
https://classichificare.com/viewtopic.p ... 270#p17270
If your service person is using the Sams photofact schematic,
the topic above notes there may be some typographical errors.
I added the schematic to "Downloads". It will be on page 4.

Re: VM 570 missing speaker
Andreas, do you do any of your own restoration work? VM stuff is well-built and well-regarded. Yours looks to be in nice shape, so it should build out just fine. Let us know how the project goes.

Re: VM 570 missing speaker
Thanks, Mr. Mogul, for posting and sharing my thread. I am a little late today getting on the forum so I am behind, story of my life, with what is going on. And just to add, if I can do this so can you, Andreas so roll up your sleeves and let us help you if you need help.
