Edison Model D

Discussions about instruments in smaller cabinets. If they don't set on the floor, they belong here. Tube and solid state, stereo and mono.

Edison Model D

Post: # 179Post TC Chris »

Since most of the familiar faces weren't following the old site any more--it was too hard to access--I'll post a new link to my YouTube video of my oldest "record player," an Edison Model D cylinder phono from around 1908-1911. Restoration? The cabinet needed it because it had been sitting in a failing garage for many years before an old guy gave it to me. But the mechanics? No, they work just fine. Wind it up, put a cylinder on, and music comes out. Here's the link:

If you snoop around you'll find videos of radio and phono restorations and, of course, the Chevy.

That old 100-plus-year-old cylinder record player sounds better than modern phones do playing music! I processed five old Silvertone "Uncle Josh" cylinder records to digital. I used foam rubber in the horn so the mics wouldn't drum. It turned out pretty good all things considered. "Uncle Josh and the Automobile" was one of the records I remember.
I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.....Thomas Alva Edison
