WT Grant Bradford 1-tube Amp Questions

[Hi-Fi-Mogul]

After my own mistakes and its own quirks, I've got
the Bradford finished.

I had some left over speaker grille material and green paint to
redo the finish.
It worked out pretty well.

I cut a vent hole in the underside of the cabinet,
and added some 1 inch tall plastic feet to allow
circulation.

After accidentally breaking the somewhat fragile
plastic tonearm, I epoxied it together.
I used a zip tie around the tonearm to use for a
new anchor for the tonearm mass spring.

I may still find a 25EH5 to see if it will boost the
Pfanstiehl 911 cart I mounted in the tonearm.
It could use a bit more output.

happens when you're stubborn and have a vision
of what something can better look like.

I've got several hours and $200 in a little kiddie player I'd be lucky to give away. Sometimes, it's about the journey....

None of these projects make financial sense but they all make personal sense. It is a chance to engage in logical thinking and to develop and apply skills to solve problems. There was another article in the NYT this week about why we ought to bring back shop and home ec classes. It noted that some kids are better hands-on learners, and further that we are turning into a helpless society, unable to make even simple repairs or undertake basic projects. I've observed that among young people who don't even keep basic tools, much less have any ability to use them. Me, I'm dying to get my flag pole up again. I welded a new section in then made a new base for it with pipes set in concrete. Very satisfying. But now the wind is blowing onshore at 33-38 mph,and it is not auspicious for raising a shoreline flag pole.

If you look at the top of the peaked lid on Mr. Mogul's project, you'll notice that the Tolex is put on in seven pieces. That would make one bone up on their geometry skills to cut the Tolex and get it on right.... Wow...

And that's why I said: "Why not just paint it ?

The contact covering material was yucky, but in good physical shape.
And it did come out acceptable.

The electrical and mechanical bumps were more time
requiring, but again a good use of gray matter exercise.

Painting Tolex to keep from replacing it is certainly the preferred method, IMHO. On both the projects I did there was no choice but to replace the Tolex. One cabinet had black mold and was coming apart, the other cabinet had stuff spilled on it and the covering was coming up or damaged. Your project came out nice, Mr. Mogul.
