New/Old and Confused!

Post: # 16671Post amglow »

Hi all! I've been inactive for at least a couple of years and lost touch with the vintage hifi/console groups. I ran across this site yesterday and when I went to sign up, I realized I've been a member for over two years! I recognize many of the members here and could have sworn I had posted before, but my profile says I have not posted. Maybe my posts were to the old "vintagehifi.net" board, which I really miss. The downloads library was massive and very helpful. I contributed a lot of documentation to that site to offset what I was benefiting with the downloads I made.

Did this forum have a different format? I seem to remember the background boarder as green in color along with other slight differences...or am I just going crazy? Anyway, I'm glad I found this site for the second time and will try to be a little more forthcoming with posts and document uploads. I have some more time now to contribute, since my work load has decreased. Good hunting!

The forum has changed in looks since you joined and a few things have been added so look around, enjoy what's here, and please post or download away. We are glad to have you back, Paul.

Welcome, Paul! It's good to see you on the forum. We have Downloads going. You have to post five times before you will be able to upload or download. We hope you will contribute to that feature and that you will enjoy it. I believe it is formatted better than Downloads on Vintage was. The information that was on Vintage still exists. If it hasn't already been posted to Downloads, it will be. Hopefully, it will be easier to search. :D :D

And you can choose the look of the site that you prefer. I opted for one other than the default view. Can't recall where the option is selected--moderators can probably identify it.

To select your style preference, click on your username at the upper right corner of the index page. Click on "user control panel". Click on "board preferences". Click on "my board style". You will see a dropdown box to the right of this. You can choose one of the three available styles. The burgundy style that is default is the bottom selection. The original blue style is the top selection. If you are using primarily mobile devices to access the forum, you may want to use the burgundy default style. It shows well on a mobile device such as a tablet or cellphone.

That "The Fisher" avatar was created from an image of a unique Fisher console I got out of the Philadelphia area. It's the only one I've ever seen. The model HNP 50 Jensen speaker code indicates 44th week of 1949 build date. So I would say this console is very early 1950. The console has a Fisher amplifier, but it uses an Espey tuner/preamp. Every other Fisher console I've ever seen uses all Fisher designed and manufactured components, less speakers and record changers. Therefore "The Fisher" logo and designation is on the tuning scale or component face plate. This console uses a water slide decal on the wood cabinet above the dial bezel. Also, the only Fisher data plate is attached to the rear cover of the cabinet and it is a model "E-11". Maybe the first "Electra"? A whole lot of unanswered questions with this one.

Looks like loktal tubes in the power amp output, and maybe 4 of them in parallel push-pull?

Hi Chris,

Yes, 7C5 push pull. 6V6 octal equivalent.

I got a question, Paul, what's the chassis sitting beside the tuner? Is it the preamp?

Good morning Bill,

That is the Fisher dynamic range expander.

Didn't E.H. Scott also have a similar feature?

Oh wow, That is very cool. Has anyone thought about a digital sound file that could be on the site and then we could play them on a stereo through bluetooth? Others could hear what a fisher dynamic range expander sounds like.... Hydro

Thanks, Paul, that is very impressive. I guess my next question, how well does it work, and can you really hear a huge difference?

Isn't the timber control on a Magnavox basically the same thing?

Good question, and one that I do not have the answer for. The timber control on my Imperial kind of goes from low tones to high tones, if that makes sense.

Simply put, a dynamic range expander makes the quiet parts quieter, and the loud parts louder. It's the opposite of a compressor.

Welcome, Paul! There is a download section here that needs loading up. It can be an important part of the site. Enjoy your time here.
