That's sad, I always like them.

As we inevitably lose great creators and performers,
we are fortunate to have their music and their
history preserved.

I have an Every Brothers album, "A Date With the Everly Brothers",
from 1960.
It has been played a LOT before I found it
in a dollar bin at the local record shop.
And let me tell you, I know why.

This album was ahead of its time, and the musical
production, especially of the guitarists, is out of this world good.
Don and Phil are at their sound best, as usual.

I have the Mono album, and that's the one to listen to.

I remember when the Beatles came along and brought a bunch of their British brethren with them. Suddenly the Everly Bros. were old stuff. But in the long run, quality wins. The Everly Bros., Roy Orbison, Chuck Berry, all those good ones.

Then there's Pat Boone and Vic Damone and a lot of ones we're happy to forget.

But the Everlys... what a collection of great music!

I like Pat Boone. My wife thinks V ic Damone is "dreamy". Most of her Vic Damone records have a million miles on them.

If any of you get "The Archive" in your OTA lineup, call up their schedule online. They periodically carry a number of the music programs from the '60s and 70s, Especially The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour. Those tapes look like they were made yesterday.

When I was in high school there was a party in somebody's basement. It was the usual high school awkwardness. The host asked what music he should play. The girls said "Vic Damone." I'd never heard of Vic Damone. The boys preferred rock'n'roll, top 40 music. The host did play some Vic Damone (anything to please the girls, which none of had quite mastered yet) and it sounded like parents' music to me. Never acquired a taste for it.

I just went and looked at the index for my childhood 45 rpm collection. OK, I'll admit that I bought a Pat Boone record ("Wonderful Time Up There"), and Perry Como ("Catch a Falling Star") and Debby Reynolds ("Tammy"). But I'm redeemed by Elvis, Marty Robbins, the Everly Bros., etc.

I was one of the "yuk" boys in high school. I drove a Buick. All the cool boys had '55 Chevies. I didn't drink or fool around getting into trouble. So, of course, I got to play the records at the sock hop instead of hopping. If you wanted to get your head handed to you, play a Barry Manilow record. Marty Robbins was always good. And, Elvis, of course.

In terms of personal taste, I'd rather hear the toilet flushing than listen to Barry Manilow.

I did not have a car in high school. Driving involved snagging one of the parents' cars, either Mom's '60 Plymouth Fury wagon, with Virgil Exner's exuberant fins and chrome, or Dad's '61 Chevy, the same one I've got now. Dad was the hardest working guy around so his car was usually gone and unavailable and the ride was usually the big three-row-seats wagon, 318 with Torqueflite. I'm pretty sure my parents decided that the Chevy should be available for my driver's test in 1963 because it was a more manageable size than the big Plymouth.

The Plymouth had the best radio--the premium "Hi-FI" model (spelled out on the push buttons) and a 6x9" oval dash speaker. It's a hybrid--12V tubes for RF and P-P transistors for the audio output. I still have it after extracting it when the car was traded in. That was in 1966, when Mom moved up to a Fury III wagon, 383 two-barrel with the sport suspension. That meant, among other things, front disc brakes. The wheel covers spelled that out: "Disc Brakes." It was one of the most agile, delightful large cars I ever drove. Car & Driver magazine had the 383 4-barrel version as the office car and wrote it up with much praise. It was really easy to drive too fast in that car because it handled so well.

Back to the music--pretty sure I listened to the Everlys in the 1960 Plymouth, sounding good over that radio.

We'd lower the lights in the gym, then play "Try A Little Tenderness" by Marty Robbins. That caused the chaperones to clean their glasses to check for hanky-panky, but the girls liked that song. And the guys all liked that song, because the girls all liked that song. I was also the sneaker guard. I handed out little tickets you had to show to get your sneakers back. Miss Bailey was always a chaperone. She was a dear lady, just a sweetheart. She and Mr. Potts had a "thing" going on, but Miss Bailey's mom wanted no part of such shenanigans. Miss Bailey was in her 50's at the time.

I owned several early '70s C-body Mopar wagons in the '80s to haul 3 kids, horse trailers and a boat around when you couldn't get a decent new big block 3 seat real station wagon (didn't want a 'burb). Those beasts hauled heinie, pulled big loads, and could still handle better than most full size cars. Wish I could buy another one, the dk green T&C with Ye Olde Fayke Woode paneling on the sides dual air, and a 440 4 bbl was a favorite. Man I'd love to be able to buy a new one today.

RIP Don E.

I'd like to be able to buy a new '68 Buick Electra 225 Limited four door hardtop. Triple black with Positraction and Mark IV road wheels, dual exhausts and with those cute little fiber optic lights on the fenders. Fat chance, huh?
